As a big comic book fan, I’ve always thought Marvel sometimes gets overlooked when we talk about the most powerful characters – DC tends to dominate that conversation. But trust me, Marvel has some seriously powerful beings too! A lot of that power comes from cosmic forces that have been around forever, and one of the biggest is something called the Power Cosmic. I first encountered it when I read “The Galactus Trilogy” in the old Fantastic Four comics – issues 48 through 50, if you’re looking for it. It’s incredible – it basically gives whoever has it control over matter and cosmic energy. We’re talking super strength, near invulnerability (only gods and other cosmic entities can really hurt you), and the ability to travel faster than light. It’s a game changer!
The Power Cosmic often transforms ordinary individuals into incredibly powerful beings. Some were already strong before receiving it, becoming even more impressive. Here are seven of the most powerful Marvel characters who have wielded the Power Cosmic and changed the universe with its might.
7) Red Hulk

When Red Hulk first appeared, he immediately became a major force, easily defeating many of Marvel’s strongest heroes and villains. He was an incredibly powerful version of the Hulk, growing stronger by absorbing energy – a skill that led to his biggest power boost. He could even steal the abilities of others, like Silver Surfer and Terrax, and gain control of the Power Cosmic. He even managed to take Surfer’s surfboard and use it for travel. General Thunderbolt Ross’s transformation into Red Hulk already made him one of Earth’s mightiest beings, and adding the Power Cosmic to that made him virtually unstoppable.
6) Anti-Man

Adam Brashear and Conner Sims, both Korean War veterans, teamed up to build the Negative Reactor, a device meant to unlock the potential of anti-matter. But an accident happened, granting them incredible abilities. Conner became Anti-Man, wielding the power of anti-matter, and Adam became the Blue Marvel. They fought each other for years. Later, the Blue Marvel and the Ultimates managed to transform Galactus into the Lifebringer, who then chose Anti-Man as his Herald, bestowing upon him the Power Cosmic. This made Anti-Man one of the most powerful beings in the universe, capable of manipulating cosmic energy and anti-matter.
5) The High Evolutionary

The High Evolutionary is a dangerous enemy of the Avengers. He’s a scientist obsessed with genetics who has transformed himself into a god-like being. He builds entire worlds of creatures, but ruthlessly eliminates any that don’t meet his incredibly high standards. Driven to create the perfect lifeform, he’s experimented with all forms of energy. At one point, he even stole the Power Cosmic from the Silver Surfer, making him even more powerful. Though he didn’t keep it for long, this allowed him to perform incredible feats like bringing dead planets back to life and instantly reshaping worlds.
4) Cosmic Ghost Rider

Imagine a future where Thanos wipes out all life on Earth, except for Frank Castle, who is driven solely by a desire for revenge. He makes a deal with Mephisto and gains the powers of the Ghost Rider. This sends him hurtling through space, tracking Thanos’ destruction until he encounters Galactus. Becoming Galactus’ Herald, Frank transforms into the Cosmic Ghost Rider – a being fueled by immense power and overwhelming trauma, which pushes him to the brink of insanity. Ultimately, he ends up serving Thanos and travels back in time to the present day. Combining the already powerful Spirit of Vengeance with the cosmic power of Galactus creates an unbelievably formidable character capable of defeating almost any opponent.
3) Thor

Okay, so Thor’s journey lately has been absolutely wild. He’s always been a powerhouse, but taking the throne from Odin really unlocked something in him. When this massive threat, the Black Winter, showed up, he didn’t just try to fight it – he became Galactus’s Herald. But here’s the twist: it was all a plan! Thor tricked Galactus and then ascended to become the Cosmic King – seriously, the most powerful version of himself we’ve ever seen. We’re talking Thor’s usual godly strength, the power of Mjolnir, the Odinforce, and the Power Cosmic all rolled into one. The kicker? He actually killed Galactus. Let that sink in. This isn’t something you do with an Infinity Gauntlet or some cosmic artifact; it takes a being of truly unimaginable power, and Thor just reached that level. It’s a bold move for Marvel, and it completely redefines what we thought was possible for this character.
2) Galacta

Okay, so Galacta – I know, the name sounds a little silly – is actually a seriously powerful player in the Marvel Multiverse. She started as this… cosmic parasite, basically feeding off Galactus himself in her universe (that’s Universe-610102, by the way). But absorbing his energy transformed her into a being on his level, and she took the name Galacta, billing herself as his daughter. The potential is there for her to match Galactus, but she’s much younger, so she hasn’t quite developed the same mastery of the Power Cosmic that he has. She’s a powerhouse, just not a fully experienced one yet.
1) Galactus

The Marvel Universe features many powerful cosmic entities, and Galactus is arguably the most well-known. Once a scientist named Galan from the planet Taa, he was among the last survivors when his universe ended. While studying the universe’s destruction, he was flooded with the energy of a new universe being born, transforming him into Galactus. Now known as the World Devourer, he travels the cosmos, consuming planets to satisfy his constant hunger. Galactus wields the Power Cosmic to an unmatched degree – few beings can harness its full potential. He transcends even the gods, existing as a fundamental force of nature.
