Being a comic book fan is fantastic right now! Superhero movies from Marvel and DC have been huge successes in theaters, and those same heroes are all over television, from shows like those in The CW’s Arrowverse to hits like Peacemaker and The Penguin on HBO. Animated series are also doing incredibly well, with popular shows like Harley Quinn and X-Men ’97. Animation has always been a great way to tell comic book stories, and now a hidden gem of a DC animated series is returning – and it’s available to stream for free!
All 52 episodes of Static Shock are now available to stream on Tubi! The show, based on the Milestone Media superhero created by Dwayne McDuffie, originally aired on The WB starting September 23, 2000. It follows Virgil Hawkins, a teenager who gains electromagnetic powers after an accident and becomes the hero Static. Static Shock was groundbreaking as the first animated series to feature an African American superhero as the main character.
Static Shock is One of DC’s Best Heroes (And the Series is One of It’s All Time Best Shows)

Static Shock is arguably DC’s most overlooked superhero, and the animated series that featured him didn’t get the attention it deserved when it first aired. The show was unique among animated superhero programs, tackling important issues like racism, bullying, and gun violence in a way that was both accessible and respectful to young viewers. Its authentic approach to these serious topics resonated with kids, and that’s why it remains so popular more than 25 years later.
The cancellation of this high-quality and innovative show remains frustrating, especially since it was largely due to a lack of potential for toy and merchandise sales, as star Phil Lamarr has explained. It’s ironic that fans have consistently requested more Static Shock – both in animated form and in comic books – ever since it ended. Now that the show is streaming for free on Tubi, it has the potential to reach a much wider audience, which could lead to a revival. With DC experiencing a resurgence in popularity with its movies and TV shows under James Gunn, the timing might be perfect for one of comics’ most iconic heroes and its fantastic animated series to return.
