The first Sinister Six was formed by Spider-Man’s enemies who kept losing to him and decided to try teaming up. However, they didn’t work well together. In Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1, Doctor Octopus devised a plan for them to fight Spider-Man individually, hoping to exhaust him, but he still won. The original lineup included well-known villains like Sandman, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, and the Vulture. Although these are the most frequently seen members, the Sinister Six has included other villains over time.
Here’s a rundown of seven of the most formidable Sinister Six members, excluding the original team.
7) Hobgoblin

Hobgoblin started as one of Marvel’s strongest villains in the 1980s, largely because his identity was a mystery. This kept each appearance thrilling and unpredictable. Unfortunately, the story became complicated when Ned Leeds was revealed as the Hobgoblin, and later, that was changed again to Roderick Kingsley.
A different Hobgoblin, Jason Macendale, became a prominent member of the Sinister Six. He first appeared in the storyline Return of the Sinister Six, where Doctor Octopus reformed the team to defeat Spider-Man—a plan that, like all others, failed. Macendale later led the Sinister Seven, and Roderick Kingsley eventually joined the group in 2017.
6) Swarm

Let me tell you about Swarm. He was a Nazi scientist who managed to escape after World War II, disappearing into the South American jungle. There, he stumbled upon a colony of bees that had been super-charged with intelligence by something from space. They attacked him, but he was a clever man. He managed to control the queen, and in the process, his physical body was destroyed. But here’s the crazy part: his mind survived, and because he controlled the queen, he essentially became the hive – he now controls all the bees as one being. It’s terrifying, but also… fascinating.
In 2015, Swarm created his own version of the Sinister Six, gathering a group of lesser-known villains in the Spider-Man and the X-Men comic series. Although the team wasn’t a major threat, Swarm was its most powerful member. His ability to command a massive swarm of bees makes him a particularly dangerous, though not top-tier, villain in the Marvel Universe.
5) Scorpion

Mac Gargan has been a recurring enemy of Spider-Man for many years, initially as the Scorpion and later briefly as Venom. While Scorpion will appear in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie, his comic book backstory is quite extensive. It actually started with J. Jonah Jameson, whose actions led Mac Gargan to become the Scorpion and contributed to his deteriorating mental state.
When Norman Osborn was imprisoned in 2004, Scorpion secretly led the Sinister Twelve with the main goal of freeing him. During this time, the Venom symbiote was also looking for a new partner and bonded with Mac, greatly increasing his strength and abilities.
4) Venom

Venom has appeared with the Sinister Six multiple times, sometimes controlled by different people. Mac Gargan led the Sinister Six when they freed Norman Osborn from prison, and he became Venom’s host then. But Eddie Brock was also part of the Sinister Six during a storyline called Another Return of the Sinister Six back in the 1990s.
Venom’s return didn’t go as planned. Instead of joining forces with the Sinister Six, he started attacking them, nearly killing Sandman and seriously injuring Kraven the Hunter and Electro. While Spider-Man usually handles the Sinister Six, Venom almost destroyed the team himself before Spider-Man even arrived.
3) Green Goblin

Norman Osborn is consistently considered one of Marvel’s greatest villains. His wealth, drive, and incredible intelligence have constantly challenged Spider-Man, and eventually, other heroes too. Surprisingly, despite being a long-time enemy of Spider-Man, he didn’t become a member of the Sinister Six until quite a while after the team formed.
Norman Osborn didn’t form his own team until 2004 with The Sinister Twelve. He and Doctor Octopus had a long history of conflict, often competing to defeat Spider-Man, making teamwork unlikely. While he only appeared with the team once, Osborn later created even more trouble with his Dark Avengers.
2) Lizard

I’ve been following Spider-Man for a long time, and Lizard is one of his oldest enemies – but also, in my opinion, the saddest. It’s just tragic because Curt Connors never wanted to become a monster. He fought it, but the transformation into that reptilian form took over. Even though he was one of Spidey’s first villains, Curt’s good heart actually held him back from joining the really big villain teams like the Sinister Six for a long time – he didn’t join up with the Sinister Twelve until much later, and that’s when Green Goblin was involved too.
Lizard was an original member of the Sinister Six, and later joined the team again when Doctor Octopus rebuilt it with Electro, Vulture, Trapster, and the Grim Reaper. A duplicate of the Lizard even appeared in the team’s sixteenth version. He’s consistently ranked among the strongest villains in Marvel Comics and remains a key member of the Sinister Six.
1) Rhino

Rhino is arguably the strongest member to ever be part of the Sinister Six. Despite being a long-time enemy of Spider-Man, he didn’t join the team until much later. He first became a member during the team’s tenth version, alongside Doctor Octopus, Electro, Mysterio, Chameleon, and Sandman, and only teamed up with them one additional time in their nineteenth iteration.
Rhino is incredibly powerful and hard to defeat. He got his abilities from exposure to chemicals and gamma rays, resulting in amazing strength, speed, endurance, and resilience. His special Rhino Armor works with these powers, making him even tougher and stronger than before.
