Marvel Comics is famous for pitting its most popular superheroes against each other in huge battles, often because they disagree or have conflicting beliefs. Even Spider-Man, who’s known for being one of the most virtuous and compassionate heroes, has fought against other crime-fighters many times. While Spider-Man gained incredible powers like strength, speed, and a danger-sensing ability from a radioactive spider bite, he’s often outmatched by Marvel’s strongest heroes who can destroy planets. However, Spider-Man is incredibly tough and clever, and he’s won some amazing fights against much more powerful heroes by using his skills, thinking fast, and surprisingly, by being able to frustrate even the biggest, most powerful egos.
One of the reasons Spider-Man is so popular is that he doesn’t just win by being strong. He uses his agility and intelligence to find his enemies’ weaknesses and defeat them. Here are some superheroes who discovered the hard way that you shouldn’t underestimate Spider-Man.
7) Superboy

When Peter Parker’s clone, Ben Reilly, briefly became Spider-Man, he was drawn into a conflict between the DC and Marvel universes. During the DC Versus Marvel event, he fought Superboy, Superman’s clone. Despite Superboy’s incredible strength – capable of destroying buildings and battling other Kryptonians – Spider-Man won the fight. He skillfully dodged Superboy’s attacks, causing the young Kryptonian to accidentally destroy a water tower. Then, Spider-Man quickly webbed him up, and the struggling Superboy flew headfirst into an electrical box, knocking him unconscious.
6) Iron Man

The Civil War storyline is one of the most famous conflicts in superhero history, and Spider-Man was right in the middle of it. At first, he supported Iron Man and his side, which favored superhero registration, and even received a special Iron Spider suit. But Spider-Man began to question his choice when he learned about the prison Iron Man had created for heroes who didn’t register. When Spider-Man decided to join Captain America’s rebel group, Iron Man tried to stop him, attempting to take control of the Iron Spider suit remotely. However, Spider-Man, being incredibly resourceful, had already disabled that control feature. Despite Iron Man’s more powerful armor, Spider-Man used his superior strength and agility to defeat him and escape.
5) Fantastic Four

The very first issue of The Amazing Spider-Man featured a surprising showdown where Spider-Man easily defeated the Fantastic Four. In a bizarre attempt to impress them and earn a spot on the team, he attacked them to demonstrate his powers. He quickly overpowered each member – trapping the Thing with electric webbing, dodging Invisible Woman’s attacks thanks to his Spider-Sense, restraining Mr. Fantastic, and even knocking back the Human Torch’s flames with a web-based baseball bat. Despite his impressive display, Spider-Man was disappointed to learn the Fantastic Four didn’t pay salaries, and he immediately left.
4) X-Men

During the Secret Wars storyline, Spider-Man remarkably defeated the entire X-Men team in a one-on-one battle. He overheard their discussion about mutant oppression and their alliance with Magneto, which prompted him to intervene. Spider-Man confronted Professor X, Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, Rogue, and Nightcrawler, taking them all on by himself. Using his agility, strength, and webs, he skillfully dodged their attacks and restrained them. After proving his point, Spider-Man departed, leaving Wolverine to admit that Spider-Man had made the X-Men look unskilled.
3) Firelord

I always thought Firelord was seriously underrated! Like the Silver Surfer, he’s a cosmic powerhouse, a former herald of Galactus with incredible abilities. I mean, the guy can withstand attacks from Thor, knows things before they happen, and can destroy spaceships with ease. But somehow, Spider-Man beat him! It’s crazy when you think about it. Apparently, in The Amazing Spider-Man #269, Firelord came to Earth just to chill, and people immediately started spraying him with a firehose, thinking he was a bad guy. He got understandably angry and started attacking, but Spider-Man showed up to stop him. Firelord tried everything to take Spidey down – even trying to drown him and bury him – but Spider-Man just… punched him out! Repeatedly. It’s wild that just a flurry of punches was enough to defeat someone with that much cosmic power!
2) Hulk

The Hulk is known as one of the strongest heroes in the Marvel Universe, capable of incredible feats like lifting mountains and even destroying planets. Normally, Spider-Man wouldn’t stand a chance against the Hulk in a direct strength contest. But in The Amazing Spider-Man #328, Spider-Man gained an extraordinary boost of power. At the worst possible time for the Hulk, Spider-Man had become Captain Universe, wielding the power of the Enigma Force. This made Spider-Man surprisingly equal to the Hulk’s strength. Ultimately, Spider-Man delivered a powerful punch that sent the Hulk flying into outer space. Luckily, Spider-Man wasn’t going to leave him there – he rescued the Hulk and brought him back to Earth.
1) Colossus and Magik

Okay, so during the whole Avengers Vs X-Men mess, five of the X-Men – Cyclops, Emma Frost, Colossus, Magik, and Namor – got a piece of this insanely powerful thing called the Phoenix Force, and predictably, it started messing with their heads. It quickly became clear that if one of these Phoenix-powered mutants fell, the others would get even stronger. That’s where Spider-Man comes in. Somehow, this guy managed to take on beings who can literally bend reality and blow up planets! Colossus and Magik nearly killed him, but Spidey’s a smart cookie. He figured out they were both super competitive and hungry for more power. He brilliantly played on their sibling rivalry, goading them into fighting each other, hoping they’d try to steal each other’s Phoenix power. And it worked! They knocked each other out cold, and just like that, both were stripped of their abilities. It was a risky move, but Spidey pulled it off!
