Iron Man’s origin story centers on Tony Stark, a man who built a high-tech suit of armor from whatever he could find while trapped in a cave, transforming himself into a superhero. Throughout his adventures, Tony has constantly improved his suit to become more powerful. Interestingly, Tony isn’t the only one to become Iron Man; other heroes have taken on the mantle, including a combined version of different heroes and even Tony’s brother, who wielded an armor far more powerful than anything Tony ever created.
Iron Man is arguably the most powerful armored hero or villain in Marvel history. Here’s a ranking of the seven strongest versions of the character.
7) Extremis-Enhanced Iron Man

As a huge Iron Man fan, I always loved the tech in Iron Man 3, especially the Extremis armor. It wasn’t just made up for the movie, though! It actually came straight from a really cool Iron Man comic run from 2005-2006, written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Adi Granov. The story introduced this Extremis virus – basically a super-soldier serum that messes with your DNA and turns you into something incredible. Tony Stark injects a tweaked version after a brutal fight with Mallen, and it’s a game-changer. It fixes his heart, gives him super healing, and makes him way stronger. But the coolest part? The armor isn’t just on him, it lives inside his bones and he can deploy it whenever he needs it, even controlling it with his mind! It’s easily his most powerful suit, and seeing it on screen was amazing because it was so faithful to the source material.
6) Thorbuster Armor

The Thorbuster Armor debuted in Iron Man Vol. 3 #64, created by Mike Grell and Alan Davis. Tony Stark designed it to fight Thor during a period when Thor possessed the powerful Odin-Force. Stark modeled the armor after the Asgardian Destroyer. This confrontation began when the government of Slokovia killed all members of a religion devoted to Thor, prompting him to seek retribution. The U.S. government tasked Iron Man with stopping Thor, and Iron Man built the armor using an Asgardian device Thor had previously given him. This crystal allows the armor to absorb and control Asgardian energy, essentially giving it the power of the Odin-Force.
5) Superior Iron Man (Endo-Sym Armor)

During the 2014 “AXIS” event, Tony Stark briefly became a villain known as Superior Iron Man. Even after the event’s mind-altering effects were reversed for others, Tony remained changed and starred in his own comic series by Tom Taylor and Yildiray Cinar. In this series, Tony was truly malicious, launching Extremis 3.0 as a health and beauty app. While promising perfection, the app was highly addictive, and Tony deliberately raised the price once people were hooked. He wore the Endo-Sym Armor, a liquid metal suit bonded to his body through mental commands. This armor, similar to Venom, could form tendrils and even grow to Hulkbuster size, allowing him to defeat opponents like Havok with a single blow.
4) Bleeding Edge Armor (Model 37)

Iron Man first appeared in his Bleeding Edge Armor in Invincible Iron Man Vol. 2 #25 (2010) by Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca. This armor uses nanites that are stored in the marrow of Tony’s bones and bleed out onto his body on mental command, so the armor is always with him. That makes it similar to Extremis, but it is also the first tech that is run entirely on repulsor technology. This allows it to self-repair on the spot, making Iron Man almost unstoppable. It can also form just about any weapon that Tony imagines, making it one of the most versatile armors he created.
3) Iron Destroyer

Tony Stark nicknamed his Uru Armor the Iron Destroyer. It first appeared during the “Fear Itself” storyline, and was created when Odin allowed Stark to use the forges of Nidavellir to upgrade his Bleeding Edge armor. The Uru metal and Asgardian magic infused into the already powerful Bleeding Edge suit made this armor incredibly strong. Based on the design of the Destroyer armor, Odin imbued it with his power, making Iron Man nearly invulnerable. However, this upgrade was temporary; Odin removed the enchantment after the defeat of Cul Borson.
2) Iron Man 2020 (Arno Stark)

Arno Stark had two outings as Iron Man 2020, but the more powerful of the two, by far, came in the 2020 miniseries Iron Man 2020 by Dan Slott, Christos Gage, and Pete Woods. Set amid a robot-rights rebellion, Tony’s brother Arno partners with Sunset Bain (Baintronics) and takes up the Iron Man mantle after Tony’s presumed death. However, he soon decides the only way to unite humans and robots is to assimilate all humans using mind control with his Iron Man suit. Tony Stark made his return here, and he soon came to realize that Arno was virtually unbeatable, and he had to trick Arno into living in a false virtual reality world where it looked like he had won just to stop him.
1) Iron Hammer (Stark Odinson)

The most powerful version of Iron Man in Marvel Comics came in Infinity Wars: Iron Hammer #1–2 (2018), by Al Ewing and Ramón Rosanas, during “Infinity Warps” with Iron Hammer. This was an amalgam of Iron Man and Thor named Stark Odinson. His origin saw Stark Odinson kidnapped by Ice Giants and forced to build an armory. He turned their forges against them and emerged as the armored Asgardian Iron Hammer. His powers combine the Asgardians’ might with Iron Man’s armor, and he even has the power to open the BIFROST (a tech version of the Bifrost).
