7 Netflix Animated Series That Need to Return, Ranked

Netflix is now a major hub for animated shows and movies from around the world, including popular titles from North America and Japan. The recent release of the first episode of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run is a great example of their exclusive content. However, not all Netflix originals stick around for long, and fans are hoping some cancelled or long-delayed series will return. Here’s a look at the animated shows we’d love to see make a comeback on the platform.

7.) Carol & The End of The World

Despite being relatively unknown, Carol & The End of The World is a darkly comedic series that follows Carol as she navigates the impending apocalypse. Over ten episodes, the show offers a fascinating look into Carol’s thoughts and how the world is changing around her. Originally released as a limited series, the lack of an actual apocalypse feels like a key part of the story is unresolved. A special episode or movie to finish Carol’s journey would likely provide a more satisfying conclusion for the series.

6.) Masters of The Universe: Revelation/Revolution

Both Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Masters of the Universe: Revolution blended familiar elements from the original cartoon with new ideas, acting as a sort of sequel/reboot. The upcoming live-action Masters of the Universe movie, set to release this summer, has a more mature tone than the original series, making it a good time to revisit this story. While there’s no news about a third season of Kevin Smith’s reimagined series, Revolution ended with a significant cliffhanger. The ending hinted at the arrival of She-Ra, but it looks like that storyline might never be concluded.

5.) The Midnight Gospel

The Midnight Gospel is definitely one of the most unique shows on this list, and surprisingly, it’s also one of the most heartfelt and thought-provoking Netflix originals. The animated series cleverly takes real podcast conversations with comedian Duncan Trussell and transforms them into a visually connected story. The final episode, where Duncan talks with his mother about life, death, and their relationship, is incredibly moving. Sadly, Netflix canceled the show, but with the new podcast material Duncan has created since the series ended, a revival isn’t out of the question. The first season has eight episodes.

4.) Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

Not only was Scott Pilgrim Takes Off a fantastic adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s comic, but it also served as a surprisingly good continuation of Scott’s story. The first season cleverly shifted the focus to Ramona and offered interesting new perspectives on the series’ villains. It’s disappointing that the creators have confirmed the show won’t return, especially since the season ended with a cliffhanger hinting at future storylines. While the first season works perfectly well on its own, it’s hard not to imagine how great the show could have been with several seasons to explore its potential.

3.) Aggretsuko

The animated series Aggretsuko ran for five seasons on Netflix, giving us over fifty episodes following the main character, Retsuko. The show wrapped up nicely, giving a satisfying conclusion to everyone’s storylines, and many fans wish it could have continued even longer. While Sanrio is famous for creating iconic characters like Hello Kitty, they really hit a home run with this metal-loving red panda. Though the show ended a few years ago, Aggretsuko remains one of Netflix’s most beloved animated series.

2.) Blue-Eye Samurai

It’s good news that Blue-Eye Samurai hasn’t been canceled – a second season is planned! But it’s been a while since the first season of Mizu’s revenge story appeared on Netflix, and we still don’t know when the new episodes will be released. Some fans are worried we might not see the show return at all this year. Given how popular and well-told the first season was, the wait for season two has been really difficult for many viewers.

1.) Castlevania

Netflix’s Castlevania is widely considered one of the best video game-to-anime adaptations. While there’s been no official word about continuing the original series, the silence surrounding Castlevania: Nocturne is worrying fans. A third season of Nocturne would be great, but with so many Castlevania games and their rich stories, there are plenty of other characters and timelines to explore in future series. The franchise has a huge amount of lore, and we’re hoping to see more of it adapted for animation.
