7 Reasons We’re So Excited About Stargate’s Revival

The story of Stargate began with a 1994 science fiction movie by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, centered around an ancient portal that connected Earth to distant parts of the galaxy. This idea proved popular enough to support almost twenty years of television shows. MGM first created the series Stargate SG-1, which ran for ten seasons (1997-2007) and became the longest-running sci-fi show in North America at that time. Two additional shows followed: Stargate Atlantis, which continued the adventurous spirit in a new part of the galaxy, and Stargate Universe, which took a darker approach and extended the franchise’s continuous run on television to fifteen years.

When Stargate Universe was cancelled in 2011, the story felt unfinished, leaving fans without a major Stargate show for fourteen years. A short web series, Stargate Origins, came out in 2018, but it didn’t lead to a full-fledged revival. That changed in November 2025 when Amazon MGM Studios announced a new Stargate series for Prime Video, bringing together creators who have worked on the show throughout its history. This is the biggest development for the franchise since the original SG-1 premiered.

7) Stargate‘s Long Absence Has Created Genuine Demand

After just two seasons, Stargate Universe was cancelled, effectively ending the Stargate television series as it attempted to evolve the show’s established story. Unlike its predecessors, SG-1 and Atlantis, which featured self-contained episodes, Universe told one continuous story, but it didn’t get the chance to finish. For 14 years after its cancellation, there were no new live-action Stargate shows with a similar scope, leaving fans without any continuation of the narrative. Now, Prime Video is bringing Stargate back for those fans who felt the story was cut short and have been hoping for a conclusion.

6) Prime Video Has an Impressive Sci-Fi Library

Amazon has become a major player in science fiction streaming. They saved the show The Expanse from cancellation and gave it a full six-season run, proving they’re willing to invest in complex sci-fi even when it’s challenging. The success of Fallout in 2024 – attracting 65 million viewers in just two weeks – further solidifies Prime Video as a go-to place for high-quality genre adaptations that resonate with a wide audience. This consistent support for the genre is particularly important for Stargate, as its intricate story and world-building require a large-scale, long-term production – something only a platform like Amazon can consistently provide.

5) The New Stargate Series Is Not a Reboot

Although details about the story are still scarce, the new series won’t be a complete restart of the Stargate universe. A full reboot would have meant ignoring thirty years of existing storylines and rebuilding the entire premise for new viewers. Instead, the upcoming series will build upon the established history while also being accessible to those unfamiliar with the previous shows. This is a tricky balance to achieve, but it allows both longtime fans to enjoy the familiar lore and new viewers to jump in without needing to watch hundreds of old episodes first.

4) Martin Gero’s Appointment as Showrunner Bridges Every Era of Stargate Television

Martin Gero, the showrunner for the new series, has a deep history with the Stargate franchise. He wrote for all three previous live-action shows, giving him a unique understanding of the series’ different styles and moods. Unlike other returning creatives who worked on just one era of Stargate, Gero’s work spans the entire television run, from SG-1 to Universe. This makes him ideally suited to blend those different elements and create a fresh, yet cohesive, direction for the revival. By choosing Gero, Prime Video clearly prioritized someone who truly understands the franchise, rather than bringing in an outsider.

3) Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi Bring Decades of Institutional Knowledge

Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner created Stargate SG-1 in 1997, and Wright remained the main creative force behind the show for its entire run, also executive producing Atlantis and Universe. Joe Mallozzi shared the executive producer role for the same length of time, gaining over ten years of experience with the show’s production and storytelling. Both are returning to the new series as contributing producers, offering valuable knowledge gained over fifteen years without interfering with the new showrunner’s control. This experience includes details a new team would take years to learn, such as how the Stargate network works, the established rules for the alien cultures, and what kinds of stories fit within the show’s universe.

2) Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich Are Executive Producing

The 1994 movie Stargate came from the minds of director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin. They created the core ideas – a hidden portal beneath the Egyptian desert, an ancient alien race that once ruled over humans, and the teams of soldiers and scientists sent to investigate what was on the other side. Now, as executive producers of the revived series, Devlin and Emmerich are creatively involved with Stargate for the first time since the original film.

1) The Architects of the Stargate Franchise Are Working Together

This new Prime Video series is a first for the Stargate franchise: the original filmmakers and the team behind the TV shows are all working together. Previously, the TV series developed its own storylines without any involvement from those who created the original movie. The fact that both creative groups are now collaborating – backed by a platform willing to invest in large-scale science fiction – is a major reason to be optimistic about this revival. Having representation from every previous era of Stargate, and a clear goal to create something fresh, gives this project a unique and solid foundation that it’s never had before.
