7 Ridiculous Ways the MCU Resurrected Dead Characters

Since its beginning in 2008, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has introduced a huge number of characters, and with so many heroes and villains, losses are inevitable in the ongoing battle between good and evil. While many characters have died throughout the MCU’s story, surprisingly few have actually come back to life.

It’s not surprising that death isn’t always final in a universe full of superheroes with incredible powers. However, the ways some Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) characters have returned from the dead are often strange and even silly. Whether it’s a plot convenience or a forced cameo, here’s a look at the most ridiculous MCU resurrections.

7) The Ancient One’s Time Heist Return

The Ancient One was a hugely powerful sorcerer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but she died after appearing in just one movie. Surprisingly, she came back for a quick scene in Avengers: Endgame during the time travel sequence, briefly talking to the Hulk. This return felt unnecessary and didn’t really add anything to the story, as she offered some advice before disappearing again permanently.

6) Quicksilver’s Weird Fake-Out Return

Quicksilver’s introduction and quick exit in his first MCU appearance left fans wanting more. WandaVision initially seemed to deliver on that desire, bringing the character back to life with Evan Peters taking over the role – a move that excited viewers familiar with his portrayal from the Fox films. However, it was later revealed that this return was a manipulation by Agatha Harkness, a false hope used to control Wanda. Bringing Quicksilver back, only to undo it so abruptly, felt unnecessary and disappointing for audiences who had hoped for a more substantial role for the character.

5) Loki Keeps Cheating Death

Loki has become a fan favorite as one of the MCU’s most compelling anti-heroes, evolving from a villain into a character with both heroic and mischievous sides. He’s ‘died’ on screen several times, but those deaths weren’t always what they seemed. He initially used illusions to fake his demise, and even after a seemingly final death at Thanos’ hands, he returned thanks to a time-traveling rescue during the events of Endgame. The problem isn’t how Loki comes back to life, but rather how often it happens.

4) Gamora’s Villainous Do-Over

Gamora, one of the original Guardians of the Galaxy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was unexpectedly killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. While time travel brought her back in Avengers: Endgame, this new Gamora had no recollection of her previous life with the Guardians. Though her return was understandable, losing her connection with her teammates felt unnecessary and diminished the character.

3) Hulk Brings Everyone Back In An Instant

The Hulk reversing Thanos’ snap with the Infinity Stones is arguably one of his greatest displays of power in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Bringing back half of all life that had been wiped out is an incredibly triumphant moment, but when you really think about it, the scale of that resurrection is almost unbelievable. It’s a truly massive act that makes the scene even more impactful than it initially appears.

2) Red Skull Returning Through Unexplained Infinity Stone Magic

The Marvel Cinematic Universe features numerous enhanced soldiers, but the Red Skull’s fate is a strange one. Initially appearing to be destroyed at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger, it was later revealed he survived and became the guardian of the Soul Stone on Vormir. While a comeback isn’t impossible in the MCU, the lack of explanation for his survival feels forced and makes it seem like a convenient way to resurrect a villain who was prematurely eliminated.

1) Vision Transferring Memories Into A New Body (From Beyond The Grave)

Vision was introduced as one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite this, he was killed off repeatedly in a short period. While Wanda Maximoff seemingly brought him back to life in WandaVision, the way it happened was incredibly complicated. The show concluded with Vision transferring his memories and personality into a new, blank body created by SWORD, making it the most unnecessarily complex resurrection in MCU history.
