7 Things Marvel Fans Didn’t Know About Deadpool

Deadpool is undeniably one of Marvel’s most popular characters. He’s made a huge impact, from starring in blockbuster movies to breaking a twenty-year rule against crossovers with DC Comics. He’s a bold, attention-grabbing character who quickly becomes unforgettable. Fans love his dark humor, over-the-top action, and surprisingly complex backstory, making him a great subject for fun and surprising facts. It seems like everything Deadpool does has the potential to become a viral meme or TikTok sensation.

Deadpool is full of surprising and often bizarre details – did you know he’s immortal because Thanos cursed him, preventing him from being with the woman he loves, Death? But beyond those well-known facts, there’s a lot more to discover about the Merc with a Mouth. Today, we’ll explore seven things even dedicated Marvel fans might not know, starting with the relatively simple and moving towards the truly obscure. Let’s dive in!

7) He Once Fused With Madcap

Madcap was a villain a lot like Deadpool, with a powerful healing ability and the added benefit of being completely immune to pain, plus he had mind control powers. During a fight, Thor blasted them both with lightning, disintegrating them. Both men’s healing factors brought them back, but because Deadpool’s was stronger and their remains were combined, only Deadpool’s body reformed. Madcap ended up trapped inside Deadpool’s mind, which drove him even more insane. They were eventually separated, but Madcap continued to appear as one of Deadpool’s signature text boxes, creating a funny visual running gag.

6) Once (Illegally) Held a Comic Book Cover Record

Deadpool is known for directly addressing the audience and has become incredibly popular, so it’s not surprising he often mentions other superheroes. He’s collaborated with almost everyone, and his comedic nature allows for more of these team-ups than most characters. This connection to the wider superhero world paid off in 2014 when Deadpool #27 (2012) earned a Guinness World Record for featuring the most recognizable characters in a single comic book. A whopping 232 established Marvel characters attended Deadpool’s wedding, cementing his place in both history and the record books.

It turns out this record was given in error. At the time, the comic with the most characters was actually G.I. Joe: America’s Elite #25, featuring 236 characters and released in 2007. The record has since been updated again, with G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #300 now holding the title with 300 characters. But honestly, getting a Guinness World Record only to have it taken away because another comic had more characters? That’s perfectly fitting for Deadpool!

5) He’s Obsessed With Bea Arthur

Deadpool, also known as Wade Wilson, is famous for constantly referencing pop culture and repeating jokes. While many fans know about his love for chimichangas and his jabs at Ryan Reynolds, his fascination with the late actress Bea Arthur is one of his most memorable running gags. It became so well-known that Ryan Reynolds actually wore a Bea Arthur t-shirt in the first Deadpool movie! Writer Joe Kelly, who helped define Deadpool’s character, revealed this was originally an inside joke between him and friends. Although it might have seemed random at first, it perfectly fits Deadpool’s quirky and unpredictable personality.

4) His Name Came From His Experiments

Most people know Deadpool gained his powers through experiments while battling cancer, but fewer realize this experience is also where he got his name. While Deadpool was clearly created as a parody of Deathstroke, within the story, the facility where he was experimented on – also called the “Deadpool” – was a brutal training ground. Those who failed the main superhero program were sent there, with the expectation that they wouldn’t survive more than two weeks. Wade Wilson was the only one to last longer, and he adopted the name “Deadpool” to symbolize his triumph over it.

3) Deadpool Can Grow Evil Clones

Deadpool is famous for his incredible ability to heal, recovering from injuries that would kill most people. He loses body parts – even his whole body – surprisingly often. In fact, if you counted all the socks lost worldwide, that’s how frequently Deadpool loses pieces of himself! Because of his healing power, these lost parts can actually grow into completely new Deadpools. The most well-known example is Evil Deadpool, a particularly dangerous and unhinged clone that grew from discarded limbs Wade threw away.

This new version of Deadpool is just as hard to kill as the first, but his body parts reattach incorrectly, making him even more gruesome in appearance. Like the original, he deeply hates himself and is determined to make the original Deadpool’s life miserable, no matter what it takes. If this happened consistently in comics, we’d quickly be overrun with countless Deadpools, each one more disturbing than the last. Thankfully, this kind of event is very unusual, and we should be glad it doesn’t happen often.

2) His Name Isn’t Wade Wilson (Maybe)

Deadpool’s history is very unclear. He’s known for not telling the truth, and his stories about his past often don’t match up with what’s actually known. This became especially complicated when the villain T-Ray revealed that Deadpool isn’t actually Wade Wilson. Instead, Deadpool was originally an injured man named Jack who was trying to escape people he’d wronged after a failed mission. He found Wade and Mercedes Wilson, a couple who took him in. While recovering with the Wilsons, Jack decided to repay their kindness by trying to kill Wade and take over his life.

Things took a bizarre turn when Mercedes died, causing Jack to break down with guilt. He started believing he was Wade Wilson, and the familiar story of Deadpool’s beginnings unfolded from there. This revised origin story is completely wild and has sparked a lot of debate, especially since we never found out if the villain, T-Ray, was telling the truth. The villain was just as unstable as Deadpool, making it impossible to know if he was honest, mistaken, or deliberately lying. The truth might remain a mystery, but honestly, a murky origin story suits Deadpool’s chaotic mental state perfectly.

1) Blind Al Was Supposed to Give Deadpool Cancer (And Be Black Widow)

Blind Al is a popular character connected to Deadpool, acting as his reluctant housemate and someone he confides in. She used to work for British Intelligence, and Deadpool was initially hired to kill her. However, he spared her life, only to later kidnap her and essentially force her to be around him. While their relationship never became romantic, writer Joe Kelly shared that it was originally intended to be more significant – Blind Al was meant to be the source of the cancer that affects Deadpool, as detailed in Comic Book Legends Revealed.

Marvel ultimately decided against a particular storyline, but a version of it showed up in the Deadpool: The End comic as one of the possible, unfulfilled futures for Wade Wilson. Interestingly, they also considered revealing that Blind Al was once a Black Widow. While Blind Al currently serves mostly as a fun supporting character for Deadpool, she had the potential to play a much larger role in the comics. Whether that would have been a good change or not, it’s still fascinating to consider what could have been.

So, that’s seven things you might not have known about Deadpool! I really hope at least one of those surprised even the biggest fans. I’m curious, which fact did you find the most interesting? And if you know a cool, little-known Deadpool detail, I’d love to hear it – maybe it’ll make the list next time!
