7 Things Nobody Will Admit About Avengers: Doomsday

Even though Avengers: Doomsday isn’t out for another year, Marvel Studios still has a lot of work to do before the next big team-up movie. The Russo brothers are returning to direct both Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars after the recasting needed following Jonathan Majors’ departure. Doomsday, currently set for release on December 18, 2026, is a highly anticipated film, but faces significant challenges in its production.

Robert Downey Jr. will appear in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, but surprisingly not as his famous character, Tony Stark. He’s set to play Doctor Doom instead. While this casting choice helps resolve some issues with the film, several problems still need to be worked out before or during the movie. The larger Multiverse Saga has created a lot of challenges for Avengers: Doomsday, and the directors, the Russo brothers, will need to address these in this sixth-phase sequel and future installments.

7) The Multiverse Hasn’t Been Used Enough Before Avengers: Doomsday

The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday is predicted to heavily feature the multiverse, marking the start of the conclusion to the current saga. While this era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been called the Multiverse Saga, it hasn’t fully delved into the potential of alternate realities. Films and series like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, The Marvels, Deadpool & Wolverine, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Loki have touched on the multiverse, but Marvel Studios could have gone much further with the concept. Doomsday might now be restricted to exploring only a limited number of alternate universes, when it had the potential to be much more expansive.

6) Doctor Doom Hasn’t Been Given Enough Foundation (MCU Has Continued to Focus on Thanos)

Fans are thrilled about Robert Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom, but Marvel hasn’t really prepared the way for his big entrance as a major villain across different universes. Surprisingly, Marvel Studios is still revisiting Thanos, the powerful threat from Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. He’s shown up frequently in the animated series What If…?, and Josh Brolin has hinted at returning to the role. While Thanos might appear in Doomsday, with Downey Jr. joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s important that Doctor Doom becomes the main focus.

5) Avengers: Doomsday’s Stakes Have Been Too Rushed

Doctor Doom is predicted to be a major threat in Avengers: Doomsday, traveling across different universes to eliminate alternate versions of himself and prevent catastrophic events. However, this storyline feels too expansive for a single film. We haven’t seen much evidence of his plans so far – just a brief, uncredited appearance where he seemingly interacted with Franklin Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Doomsday appears to be heavily focused on Doom’s destructive goals, which is promising, but the build-up has felt quick, and more preparation over the next year would be welcome.

4) Too Many MCU Characters in Avengers: Doomsday Have Been Missing for Too Long

At the end of March, Marvel Studios revealed the first 26 actors who will appear alongside Robert Downey Jr. in the upcoming film, including characters from the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and more. It’s been a while since some of these heroes have been on screen – we haven’t seen Shang-Chi since 2021, and characters like Thor, Shuri, M’Baku, and Namor haven’t appeared since 2022. As even more Marvel characters are expected to join Downey Jr. in Doomsday, we may see some long-absent heroes return, highlighting a common criticism of the current Multiverse Saga.

3) Steve Rogers’ Return in Avengers: Doomsday is Nothing But Fan-Service

There’s been a lot of talk for months that Chris Evans will reprise his role as Captain America in the new Avengers: Doomsday movie, and recent buzz about the upcoming trailer seems to confirm it. While many fans felt Steve Rogers received a satisfying conclusion in Avengers: Endgame, bringing him back for Doomsday feels like a move purely to please fans, rather than serve the story. Although an alternate timeline version of him might be causing problems and drawing the attention of Doctor Doom, it’s disappointing that the emotional impact of Endgame’s ending may be undone.

2) Avengers: Doomsday’s Cast Has an Impossible Task After Infinity War & Endgame

The Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame films were the largest-scale movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, bringing together nearly all of the heroes introduced up to that point. Now, the upcoming Doomsday and Secret Wars movies need to be even bigger, which creates a challenge for the future of Phase 6. While Doomsday currently has 27 confirmed actors, hints suggest the final cast could exceed 60, potentially making it enormous. It remains to be seen if there will be enough time to develop these characters meaningfully, but both Doomsday and Secret Wars are expected to be massive events.

1) Kang the Conqueror Still Needs a Proper Ending

When the Multiverse Saga began, Jonathan Majors played Kang the Conqueror and different versions of him, establishing Kang as the main villain of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, Majors’ legal issues and subsequent firing led Marvel to change plans, moving away from a storyline centered on The Kang Dynasty and towards Doomsday. Although Marvel might leave Kang’s story unresolved, there are many unanswered questions about Kang and his variants, like the Council of Kangs. It would be good for Avengers: Doomsday to provide some closure for the character, unless Marvel plans to bring him back later on.
