Since the initial days of Marvel Comics, The Hulk has consistently been among their mightiest heroes. However, he also stands out as one of Marvel’s saddest characters. When transformed into the Hulk, Bruce Banner loses control over his actions. Despite longing for solitude, the Hulk is often forced to defend himself due to constant threats. On occasion, people have gone too far, pushing him beyond his limits, or he’s been manipulated to unleash his fury. During these instances, even briefly, The Hulk transformed into one of Marvel Comics’ most fearsome antagonists.
Delving into instances where the colossal power and indomitable resilience of the Hulk almost annihilated the Marvel Universe, as well as a situation in which his dominance was largely confirmed. Here’s the rundown.
7) The Horseman War
In the realm of comic book history, stories about Apocalypse and his Horsemen are typically confined to the X-Men and their associates. But there was an exception when Apocalypse offered the role of War to none other than the Incredible Hulk in issue #456. Apocalypse managed to persuade Hulk, promising him relief from the agony and turmoil that filled his mind, which largely stemmed from his father Brian’s distress. With Apocalypse’s intervention, Hulk transformed into a more powerful version of himself, with the constant inner voices silenced. He then engaged in fierce battles against Absorbing Man and Juggernaut, emerging victorious against the former and nearly defeating the latter. However, when he came close to killing Rick Jones, Apocalypse’s influence over Hulk was broken, leading him to go into hiding once more.
6) The Immortal Hulk
In 2015, Marvel Comics introduced a new phase for the Hulk character, as he sacrificed himself to stop a radiation leak and passed his powers onto Amadeus Cho, transforming him into Totally Awesome Hulk. However, this was not the end of Bruce Banner’s story. The scientist began conducting experiments with gamma-irradiated cells on himself, which eventually led to the Avengers discovering and confronting him. In the ensuing conflict, Hawkeye fatally wounded Banner, but his death proved temporary as he was resurrected three separate times by The Hand, Arnim Zola, and the Challenger. Each time he came back, he exhibited a ferocious, almost unstoppable nature. His reign of terror finally ended when Banner understood that Hulk couldn’t truly die; instead, he retreated to the Green Room before being reborn through the Green Door. Once he grasped the truth, Banner regained control over himself and went into seclusion.
5) Savage Hulk
The Savage Hulk refers to a state where Hulk, due to overwhelming anger and deep emotions, loses self-control and unleashes rampant fury. In this form, he acts impulsively and without restraint. What sets the Savage Hulk apart is that Hulk has frequently reverted to this state throughout his life, making him a formidable force of destruction. One of Hulk’s key abilities is that his power increases proportionally with his anger, and he becomes more powerful when Bruce Banner (Hulk’s human alter ego) is no longer in control. In order to defeat Onslaught, Hulk forced Bruce Banner out of consciousness, which was the only way he could overcome the menace. Prior to this, Hulk was often one of nature’s most destructive forces when transformed into the Savage Hulk.
4) Heroes Reborn: The Return
Following Hulk’s victory over Onslaught, the world underwent a significant transformation. Two distinct versions of Earth came into existence, each hosting its unique roster of deceased superheroes (such as the Avengers and Fantastic Four) on one planet, while survivors like Spider-Man and the X-Men dwelled on the other. However, an anomaly emerged: Hulk was simultaneously present on both Earths – possessing Bruce Banner on one, while absent of him on the other. This dual existence proved lethal to both characters. On one Earth, Hulk’s radiation emission jeopardized the planet’s survival, whereas on the other, he often reverted to his Savage Hulk persona, losing control. The turning point came when these two versions of Hulk found themselves on a single Earth, allowing them to engage in combat, merge, and ultimately aid in saving their world. With this combined effort, Franklin Richards was able to reunite all the heroes back home.
3) Old Man Logan
On various worlds I’ve come across, The Hulk has been a beacon of hope, but not in every alternate universe. One particularly grim version emerged on Earth-807128, where the story unfolded for Old Man Logan. In this dystopian world, villains united against heroes, overthrowing them and taking control of the entire United States, dividing it among themselves. The Hulk managed to vanquish Abomination and seized California for himself. He found peace there, married his cousin She-Hulk, and they spawned grotesque offspring, whom we came to know as the Hulk Gang. These monstrous descendants terrorized anyone surviving near them. The Hulk Gang even developed a taste for human flesh, which ultimately led to the downfall of “Pappy Banner.” When the Hulk ordered the murder of Logan’s family, the wounded Wolverine sought revenge by slaying the Hulk’s children and then confronting the monster itself. Unfortunately for The Hulk, Logan healed quickly and emerged from his foe’s body, seemingly ending the monstrosity. However, true to form, Logan resurfaced and finished off the beast that once was his friend.
2) World Breaker Hulk
In the tale of World War Hulk, there existed no Hulk more formidable than the World Breaker. This was due to the fact that in the storyline “World War Hulk”, Hulk appeared brimming with wrath and harbored a thirst for vengeance against his once-trusted companions who had betrayed him. The Illuminati, in their cunning, had exiled Hulk to the depths of space, intending for him to live out his days on an uninhabited planet where peace could be his only solace. However, Hulk overshot his mark and found himself stranded on a populated world instead. On this new planet, he became a hero, fell in love, and eventually tied the knot. But when a bomb claimed the lives of his wife and allies, Hulk returned to Earth with a grudge against his former friends.
In an epic showdown, World Breaker Hulk overpowered every single member of the Illuminati – Iron Man, Black Bolt, Reed Richards, Doctor Strange, and more. No one could match him, not even Sentry, who dealt Hulk a near-fatal blow. Yet, Hulk’s strength was unparalleled, and he only succumbed when he chose to surrender, having effectively proven his point.
1) Maestro
In the alternate reality of Earth-9200, Hulk, known as Maestro, had once ruled over part of America following a nuclear war that devastated the world. The Hulk, who was often shunned and attacked, chose isolation instead of helping protect the world that feared him. When he emerged after the destruction, he found the survivors to be much like the rest of humanity, so he decided to seize power for himself and became the ruler of one of the remaining cities in America. Adopting the name Maestro, he went on to eliminate several surviving heroes, including Hercules. It was only when a time-traveling version of himself arrived that Maestro met his end, tricked as he was and sent back to the Gamma explosion that gave birth to him.
