Peach Momoko’s “Ultimate X-Men” stands out as one of the biggest successes in the new Ultimate Universe. Set in Hi no Kuni, which serves as an alternative to East Asia, the comic series showcases a style that leans more towards manga than typical Western comics. Compared to other Ultimate titles, this book has taken the most creative liberties and it has proven to be extremely rewarding. Although “Ultimate X-Men” and “Ultimate Wolverine” share some common ground when it comes to mutant characters, there are still many missing from both series.
In a departure from our usual X-Men teams, Ultimate X-Men stands out as uniquely distinct. Consequently, it’s only fitting that they face threats unlike any other, such as those seen in Ultimate Wolverine. This difference opens up an abundance of chances for fresh interpretations of classic adversaries in Ultimate X-Men. Here are the antagonists we anticipate seeing, given the direction the books have been developing so far.
7) Mr. Sinister
In simpler terms, it’s suggested that Nathaniel Essex, also known as Mr. Sinister, is subtly portrayed as a secondary villain alongside the Shadow King. While he isn’t the primary antagonist yet, his role and threat have been gradually developed. His position as a cult leader could potentially stir up more mutants to become involved in
In this storyline, it’s yet unknown if he is a genius geneticist or not, but his potential for causing trouble for the characters seems high. So far, we haven’t witnessed his actions as leader of the Children of the Atom cult, but there’s still time to see him become Sinister, following the girls’ victory over the Shadow King. This significant event is before the Ultimate Endgame, so we have another arc to look forward to.
6) Daken
In Earth-616, Akihiro Daken is portrayed as the sinister offspring of Wolverine, a character known for his darker nature compared to his father. Half Japanese, he inherits Wolverine’s formidable skills, yet instead of adamantium claws, he sports bone claws. In the Ultimate X-Men series, there is a figure named Akhirio who was held captive by the Children of the Atom cult and may very well be Daken. Introducing an antagonistic Wolverine in Japan adds an intriguing twist to the usual heroic portrayal of Wolverine in Russia.
I’ve recently found myself serving more as a narrative tool, but my capacity to stir up trouble for the ladies is undoubtedly there. Here’s hoping that future events will bring me back into action, unleashing the chaos I’m known for.
5) Cameron Hodge
In a fascinating turn of events, the man who once defended Warren Worthington III in court, Cameron Hodge, is now a formidable mutant-hunting cyborg. This character, who has often been overlooked among the X-Men roster, holds immense potential to captivate longtime X-fans on Earth 6160. Imagine him pursuing mutants in the Land of the Rising Sun (Hi no Kuni) before making his way across Eurasia, or perhaps he’s lurking within the digital realm, stalking the social media accounts of potential targets. The creative possibilities are endless!
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I must say that in this captivating narrative, the bond between Hodge and Angel, a crucial facet of his character, takes a dramatic twist. In previous works like “Ultimate Wolverine,” their connection was sparse at best. But in this refreshing turn of events, their relationship is severed – not due to personal animosity, but for the greater good of all mutants. This altered dynamic gives Hodge a more sinister edge, making him truly detestable.
4) Magik
In the Marvel universe, Magik, a prominent member of the New Mutants in the 616 continuity, assumes a secondary antagonist role in the “Ultimate Wolverine” series. However, Colossus has taken center stage as the main villain in this storyline. Given that “Ultimate X-Men” leans more towards mysticism rather than science fiction, it seems fitting to introduce Magik into this series, perhaps portraying her as a mutant hunter working alongside her brother. Why not transfer her character over here for a fresh take on the Ultimate universe?
In a somewhat debatable twist, let’s explore the concept of her character being villainous in this fictional realm. Given that we already have Silver Samurai and Sunfire from Hi no Kuni, it might be intriguing to swap their roles. The connection between the two narratives seems palpable, making this a potential crossover point. Magik could serve as the linchpin, connecting these stories together, while our task now is figuring out a suitable role for Omega Red.
3) Reverend Stryker
You probably already know that William Stryker is a Reverend, not a clone of Gyrich. If you didn’t know, now you do. In the comics, Stryker is portrayed as an anti-mutant evangelist who wants to eliminate mutants. He carries out this goal with the help of his followers, claiming that their actions are sanctioned by God. Given this background, it seems fitting to introduce him in Ultimate X-Men and give him a more authentic backstory.
In other words, there are numerous adjustments we could make to suit him better. While it might seem excessive to reintroduce him as a Reverend character again, in a world designed for new audiences, it could potentially appeal more to younger readers who may find “God Loves, Man Kills” too complex at the moment.
2) Mojo
Originating from Mojoworld, the irritating yet beloved alien television tycoon known as Mojo is among the most enduring X-Men antagonists. Transplanting him into Japan, where game shows hold a higher esteem than they do in Russia, could be an excellent fit for this universe. While it might seem obvious and cheesy, Mojo’s character aligns perfectly with the style of Ultimate X-Men, requiring minimal adjustments to seamlessly integrate him into the series.
1) Mystique
In the comic series “Ultimate Wolverine,” the story arc for the character Mystique, who was previously only briefly introduced, was abruptly concluded in a frustrating manner. Since Maystorm is inspired by Wind-Rider (also known as Storm), it’s feasible that there could be two Mystiques present. Adding another female character to the team that embodies Mystique would enrich the existing dynamics and provide more depth to the group as well.
If she chooses to act independently, she could pose a significant threat to the team, similar to Daken. She might even gain hero status with the villain here and another one in Russia. Whether she’s linked to Mystique or Irene Adler is something we’ll learn later, but given that Mystique is a powerful character, it would be exciting to see her in Ultimate X-Men.
