Wolverine quickly became a major action hero for Marvel Comics, first appearing alongside characters like the Hulk and the Wendigo. He’s been involved in countless incredible fights over the years, including memorable battles with villains like Shingen Yashida, Sabretooth, the Hulk, Omega Red, and Cyber. Thanks to his incredibly durable skeleton and rapid healing, Wolverine consistently overcomes opponents much stronger than himself, surviving and winning even after taking severe beatings.
Wolverine is known for fighting incredibly dangerous foes, and his battles are often brutal. He’s unmatched at surviving, and has endured some truly horrific experiences. Here are seven of the worst things Wolverine has ever lived through – injuries and setbacks that would defeat almost any other hero.
7) Losing His Healing Factor

Wolverine is famous for his incredible healing ability, so the events in the “Hunting Season” storyline were a major turning point. As an Avenger, Logan was caught in a hostage crisis that quickly escalated into an invasion from the Microverse. His healing factor was the only thing keeping him alive. Faced with an impossible choice, Wolverine decided to sacrifice his healing powers to stop the invasion. This left him vulnerable and forced him to adapt his fighting style. Issues of Wolverine (Vol. 5) and Vol. 6 detailed his struggles, including battles with Black Panther and Sabretooth, and training with martial arts masters like Iron Fist and Shang-Chi. The beatings he took from Sabretooth (Victor Creed) were particularly brutal, but he managed to endure. Ultimately, Wolverine died after being fully coated in adamantium – a process that would have been fatal even with his healing factor.
6) His Battle Against Sabretooth in Wolverine (Vol 2) #126

As a long-time Wolverine fan, I’ve seen him go through some seriously rough fights, and so many of the worst beatings have come from Sabretooth. These two have been at each other’s throats for decades, but issue #126 of Wolverine (Vol. 2) really stands out. It was early days for artist Leinil Yu, and Chris Claremont was writing, and together they created one of their best issues ever. What made this fight so intense was that Wolverine was without his adamantium, which usually protects him from Victor Creed’s relentless attacks. He somehow managed to win, or so we thought! Looking back, you notice the fight choreography was… careful. No direct bone-on-bone contact, just claws hitting flesh. It was all setup, because Sabretooth also had an adamantium skeleton! He proceeded to absolutely destroy Logan – broke three of his claws, slashed his throat, and even threw him off a roof! It’s still the most brutal beating Sabretooth has ever given his old enemy, and a truly shocking moment in the comics.
5) The Battle with Horde

Wolverine is known for surviving battles against incredibly powerful foes, especially during his time with the X-Men. He’s fought cosmic entities like the Phoenix Force, alien teams like the Imperial Guard, and monstrous creatures like the Brood – and always lived to tell the tale. However, his fight against Horde in X-Men Annual #11 was almost his end. Horde was an unbelievably powerful alien warrior who quickly defeated the X-Men. Wolverine was nearly destroyed, but a splash of his blood landed on a powerful crystal, allowing him to regenerate and ultimately defeat Horde, even bringing his teammates back to life. While he’s faced many dangers since then, this battle remains one of his most harrowing experiences.
4) Atomized by Nitro

I remember when the Civil War really kicked off – it was shocking when Nitro blew himself up and took a school with him. Seeing Wolverine go after him in Wolverine (Vol. 3) #42-48 was intense. Logan finally tracked him down, but it turned out Nitro’s powers had been messed with by Walter Declun, the shady CEO of Damage Control. Then, the guy who originally killed Captain Marvel just… exploded again, and it nearly took Wolverine out! He was reduced to his skeleton, it was awful. Luckily, his healing factor is incredible and he managed to recover most of his injuries in just a few days. Honestly, it was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen him survive, and it really changed how everyone saw him.
3) Eaten by the Hulk

“Old Man Logan” is a celebrated Wolverine story, famous for its intense and expertly illustrated violence, brought to life by Steve McNiven and Dexter Vines. The story features some of Wolverine’s most brutal fights, culminating in a confrontation with the Hulk Gang and, ultimately, the Hulk himself. In a shocking scene, the Hulk defeats and seemingly devours Logan. However, Logan miraculously survives, bursting free from inside the Hulk. This moment remains one of the most memorable and visually striking in Wolverine’s long history.
2) Magneto Tearing Out His Adamantium

Issue #25 of X-Men (Vol. 3) dramatically changed Wolverine’s story. Professor X asked him to join a team whose mission was to kill Magneto. They traveled to Avalon, Magneto’s new base in space, and launched an attack. Wolverine initially surprised Magneto and landed a powerful hit. But when he paused to taunt him, Magneto retaliated horribly. He manipulated Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton at a molecular level, painfully extracting it through his skin. This shocking moment has become iconic for X-Men fans and led to a fascinating period in Wolverine’s comic book adventures.
1) Ripped In Half

I never imagined seeing Wolverine torn in two, so it was shocking when it happened in the Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk comic series. It actually makes sense, though – if adamantium covered his entire skeleton, he wouldn’t be able to move. And the Hulk is strong enough to rip him apart! This was the first major instance of it, but it wouldn’t be the last. Many comics have since shown Wolverine, still alive, dragging himself across the ground to rejoin his severed halves and let his healing factor take over.
