Man, there have been so many Power Rangers games over the years! It all started back in ’94 with that side-scrolling game on the SNES, and since then, they’ve tried everything – fighting games, 3D action, even those plug-and-play consoles and mobile stuff. They’ve even done some crazy crossovers with games like Street Fighter, Fortnite, and ARK: Survival Ascended. But there was one game fans were really hoping for, and seven years ago, it finally came out… and it totally blew us away!
The Power Rangers franchise partnered with nWay in 2017 to create Power Rangers: Legacy Wars, a mobile fighting game featuring characters from throughout the series’ history. The game was enjoyable and had a great selection of fighters, leading fans to request a similar game for consoles. In 2019, their wish came true with Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, developed by nWay and Lionsgate Games. While the game could have been even better, it provided a really satisfying fighting game experience for longtime Power Rangers fans.
Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid Combined Fun Battles and Ultimate Fan Service
The studio successfully translated the world of Power Rangers into an exciting fighting game, including both heroes and villains. They built on that foundation with Battle for the Grid, but the game’s success hinged on enjoyable core gameplay. Luckily, it delivered, offering deep combo possibilities, fast-paced 3-on-3 team battles, and powerful Megazord assists that added a sense of epic scale.
The game was simple to pick up and play, but mastering it took time and effort. You could spend one bar of your special energy to perform enhanced attacks, and two bars for even stronger ones. Filling a separate meter allowed you to unleash a devastating ultimate attack that could inflict massive damage on your opponent.
Every character felt unique and offered a different way to play, drawing on the show’s 25-year history. The game didn’t just include characters from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but also from Lost Galaxy, S.P.D., Zeo, Time Force, Megaforce, Jungle Fury, Samurai, Mystic Force, the 2017 film, and the comic books.
The game features a surprisingly diverse group of characters, including Jason and Lord Zedd from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Ranger Slayer from BOOM! Studios comics, Billy from the 2017 movie, the Shadow Ranger from S.P.D., and Jen Scotts from Time Force. There’s also Poisandra from Dino Charge and Lord Drakkon, and that’s not even everyone! It even had a special collaboration with Street Fighter, turning characters like Ryu and Chun-Li into Power Rangers.
The game included a variety of Megazords, from the classic Dino Megazord to newer additions like Mega Goldar and the S.P.D. Delta Squad Megazord. It even featured the comic-exclusive Gravezord, along with fan favorites like the Samurai Megazord and Dragonzord. Players could battle across levels based on iconic locations from the Power Rangers universe, including the Command Center from Mighty Morphin, Corinth from RPM, the planet from the 2017 movie, Delta Base from S.P.D., and Harwood County from Megaforce.
Over four seasons of downloadable content, the game gained new fighters, gameplay features, and stages. While there was potential for improvement in future installments or updates, Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid ultimately delivered a great fighting game experience that fans had long been waiting for, and it’s worthy of recognition.
