James Mangold might not be the first director people think of when discussing the best filmmakers today, but he’s built an incredibly strong body of work. He’s directed some truly outstanding films, including the critically acclaimed comic book movie Logan, Oscar-nominated biopics like A Complete Unknown and Walk the Line, and a fantastic Western, 3:10 to Yuma. Mangold consistently delivers high-quality films across different genres, making anything he directs worth watching. He even directed one of the best sports movies of the 2010s, which is now a popular hit on Netflix.
Starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale, the movie Ford v Ferrari was the seventh most popular film on Netflix for the week of December 29th to January 4th. It ranked higher than films like The Girl Who Got Away, Pitch Perfect 2, and Priscilla on the streaming service’s top 10 list.
Ford v Ferrari Is a Critically Acclaimed Sports Drama Worth Watching

The movie Ford v Ferrari tells the real story of Ford’s challenge to beat Ferrari at the famous 1966 Le Mans race. Matt Damon plays Carroll Shelby, the car designer chosen to build a vehicle capable of winning. Shelby brings together a team, including his close friend and skilled but difficult driver, Ken Miles (played by Christian Bale). They work to create their ideal race car, all while navigating the demands of the Ford company. Interestingly, Ford v Ferrari can also be seen as a film about making movies, highlighting the challenges of creative people working with corporate interests.
2019 offered a fantastic lineup of films, and Ford v Ferrari truly shone. With a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie was widely praised for its acting and director James Mangold’s thrilling and realistic depiction of the races. Like the racing drama F1, Ford v Ferrari delivers captivating and exciting action sequences. Mangold expertly captures the intensity of the Le Mans race, making viewers feel like they’re right there in the car with the drivers during a particularly gripping finale. If you have Netflix, Ford v Ferrari is best experienced on the largest screen available to fully appreciate its impact. The film’s Academy Awards for Best Film Editing and Best Sound Editing highlight the exceptional quality of its racing scenes.
Like with any good movie, the thrilling action in Ford v Ferrari wouldn’t have landed if I hadn’t been completely drawn into the story. Thankfully, director James Mangold built the whole film around the relationship between Shelby and Miles, and it really works. Matt Damon and Christian Bale are fantastic, of course, and they feel like genuinely old friends tackling an incredible challenge together. I instantly found myself rooting for them – they’re the ultimate underdogs! The tension isn’t just about beating Ferrari, either; their struggles with the Ford executives add a lot to the story, even knowing how things ultimately turned out. And the supporting cast is great too, especially Jon Bernthal as Iacocca and Tracy Letts as Henry Ford II.
With both Damon and Bale appearing in major films this year – The Odyssey and The Bride! – many moviegoers might want to revisit their past work. A perfect place to start is Ford v Ferrari, currently available on Netflix. It’s considered one of director James Mangold’s best films, and it’s thoroughly enjoyable even if you’re not a racing enthusiast.
