It’s been almost ten years since Avengers: Endgame, and I think we’re finally seeing who’s really taking charge in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios was on a roll when the Infinity Saga wrapped up in 2019, so everyone was eager to see what they’d do next after Thanos was defeated. With Iron Man gone and Captain America retired, a big question heading into this new Multiverse Saga was: who would become the new leader and guide both the established heroes and all the new faces we’re meeting?
Several heroes were strong contenders to lead the Avengers after the Infinity Saga. Doctor Strange seemed like a natural choice, having been central to defeating Thanos and exploring the multiverse in Phase 4. Others believed Sam Wilson, who inherited Captain America’s shield, was the right person for the job. Captain Marvel was also a popular pick, demonstrating strong leadership during the fight against Thanos and being one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios has now announced who will take on the role.
The Doomsday Trailer Crowns Thor As The Avengers’ New Leader

At CinemaCon 2026, Marvel Studios showed the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday. Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans appeared alongside Kevin Feige and the Russo brothers to present the footage. Though the trailer isn’t available to the general public yet, it suggests Thor will be taking on a leadership role – not just within the core Avengers team, but for all active heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This idea was hinted at by Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame when he gave the call to action, “Avengers Assemble,” during the Battle of Earth.
The trailer is packed with exciting moments, but the biggest reveal is Thor taking the lead in the fight against Doctor Doom. While Thor is already known as one of the MCU’s greatest warriors, having fought in numerous battles, it’s particularly impactful to see him uniting everyone against this new threat. He gives a powerful speech, inspiring his allies while also being honest about the immense challenge they face. He says: “I’ve fought alongside many powerful warriors who ultimately fell. They faced enemies that didn’t frighten me as much as this one does. All our sacrifices will be meaningless if we don’t fight together. If we survive, we’ll be like family, but we’re going to need a miracle.”
Right now, Thor embodies the best qualities of both Tony Stark and Steve Rogers. Like Captain America, who was famous for his inspiring speeches – such as the one before the time heist in Avengers: Endgame – Thor is a leader. But like Iron Man, he’s also upfront about the dangers they face. Iron Man was the first to warn everyone about Thanos, even though his warnings weren’t initially heeded.
Why Thor Becoming The New Avengers Leader Makes Sense

It’s unexpected to see Thor take charge of the Avengers in Avengers: Doomsday, especially considering how his character developed throughout the Infinity Saga and Multiverse Saga. While he’s always been a powerful warrior and the rightful heir to the throne, he previously preferred fighting to ruling, which is why he let Valkyrie become queen. His transformation into a more lighthearted character was popular with fans, but the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday suggests he’s becoming more serious, possibly because of his role as a father.
When it comes to leading the Avengers after Iron Man and Captain America, Thor is the natural choice. He’s the last of the original powerful trio and has a long history of fighting alongside them, making him perfect to carry on their work as the Marvel Cinematic Universe moves forward. While Chris Evans did return as Captain America, his role isn’t central to the current storylines, and the focus should remain on the new heroes driving the Multiverse Saga.
It’s fitting that Thor, after making huge errors during the battle with Thanos – like failing to defeat him in Avengers: Infinity War and being weighed down by guilt in Avengers: Endgame – now has a chance to redeem himself. This isn’t about others holding him accountable, but about him finding a way to make things right and ultimately forgive himself. Plus, featuring a popular actor like Chris Hemsworth as Thor is a smart way to attract audiences to the movie.
