Most people find K-dramas by browsing streaming services like Netflix, Viki, or Disney+. But the companies that actually make these shows – the studios – don’t always get the attention they deserve. Some key studios include Studio N, JTBC Studios, Pan Entertainment, and Monster Union. However, Studio Dragon is probably the most well-known name among K-drama fans.
For the past fifteen years, Studio Dragon has consistently created some of the most popular and well-received K-dramas in a wide range of genres. They’ve built such a strong reputation that audiences now anticipate high quality with every new release, and the studio almost always delivers. Here are ten K-dramas from Studio Dragon that are considered absolute masterpieces.
8. Bon Appétit, Your Majesty
Where To Stream: Netflix
Though it just came out in August 2025, Bon Appétit, Your Majesty is quickly becoming a popular favorite on Studio Dragon and Netflix. The series stars Lim Yoona of Girls’ Generation, and like her previous success, King the Land, it’s a charming romantic comedy based on a webtoon.
I recently watched Bon Appétit, Your Majesty, and it wasn’t the typical modern-day romance I expected. Instead, it uses the familiar ‘isekai’ trope – you know, where someone gets transported to another world. In this case, it’s Yeon Ji-yeon, a really talented chef, who finds herself sent back in time through an old cookbook. Whether it was luck or bad luck, she ends up as the personal chef to Lee Heon, who’s known as both a ruthless ruler and a huge foodie.
Ji-yeon’s livelihood depends on the food she creates for the royal court, so she’s bringing modern cooking to Korea’s Joseon dynasty – and getting creative with limited resources! Bon Appétit, Your Majesty is a short, twelve-episode series that’s a delight to watch, though many viewers wish it were longer.
7. It’s Okay to Not Be Okay
Where To Stream: Netflix
Wow, 2020 was amazing for K-dramas! We had so many incredible shows come out – things like Itaewon Class, Start-Up, True Beauty, The Uncanny Counter, and Mr. Queen were all over the place. But for me, and for Studio Dragon, It’s Okay to Not Be Okay really stood out. I was completely captivated by the story, and especially by Seo Ye-ji’s character, Ko Mun-yeong. She plays this really unique children’s author who’s a bit of an enigma, and people say she might even have antisocial tendencies – it makes for a super compelling watch!
The story begins when Mun-yeong falls for Moon Gang-tae, a man who constantly travels while caring for his autistic brother, a gifted artist. She hires the brother to illustrate her new book. However, what starts as a romantic comedy quickly becomes much more complex, delving into Mun-yeong’s difficult past and Gang-tae’s own emotional struggles, all against the backdrop of a mysterious murder.
Despite recent issues surrounding Kim Soo-hyun, this series is well worth watching, largely due to its beautiful visuals and imaginative animated sequences. It also stands out for its thoughtful and accurate portrayal of autism and personality disorders, enhanced by a fantastic performance from Seo Ye-ji.
6. Twenty Five Twenty One
Where To Stream: Netflix
I’ve noticed a trend: shows that tap into nostalgia really seem to do well. Just look at the popularity of series like Reply 1988 and even more recent ones like Undercover Miss Hong. Twenty Five Twenty One clearly understands this, focusing heavily on the feel of the 1990s. The story takes place after the IMF crisis and follows Na Hee-do, a gifted fencer, and Baek Yi-jin, a young man forced to rebuild his life after his family loses everything. It’s a blend of romantic comedy and a story about growing up.
The story unfolds through the perspective of Hee-do’s daughter, who discovers her mother’s diary years later, and this framing device actually enhances the experience. Although the ending of Twenty Five Twenty One is known for being sad, it’s still worth watching this beautiful and moving series.
5. Hotel Del Luna
Where To Stream: Netflix
IU is known for picking her acting roles carefully, and when she appears in a K-drama, it’s usually very successful. This is especially true when Studio Dragon produces it, and Hotel Del Luna has all the right elements. The show centers around a mysterious hotel that caters to ghosts in Seoul, offering them a place to stay and even helping them resolve their unfinished business—though everything comes at a cost.
The drama Hotel Del Luna begins when Gu Chan-sung starts working as the manager to pay back a debt his father owed to the hotel’s enigmatic owner, Jang Man-wol. He’s quickly pulled into a hidden, supernatural world and begins to uncover the hotel’s mysteries and Man-wol’s heartbreaking history. Beyond its fantastic performances and compelling storyline, Hotel Del Luna offers a blend of romance, humor, sadness, thrills, and fantasy, making it a show that remains enjoyable even today.
4. Gyeonseong Creature
Where To Stream: Netflix
Studio Dragon isn’t just known for heartwarming romantic comedies and epic fantasy series – they also excel at horror, as proven by the success of Sweet Home and Gyeongseong Creature. While both shows are popular, Gyeongseong Creature is the stronger of the two, offering a fresh and unexpected take on the typical zombie horror story.
This series takes place in Seoul after World War II, then known as Gyeongseong. It centers on Jang Tae-sang and Yoon Cha-ok, an unusual pair who investigate a hospital. There, instead of a normal zombie outbreak, the Japanese military has been conducting human experiments that have created a terrifying creature using a zombie virus.
Beyond giving people strange abilities, this virus can also grant immortality, which adds a surprising twist to the story. Overall, with two seasons available, Gyeongseong Creature is full of action and features impressive special effects, making it enjoyable even if you don’t usually like horror.
3. Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha
Where To Stream: Netflix
Studio Dragon produces a lot of romantic comedies each season, but Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha stands out as one of the most beloved and successful. The show is set in the charming seaside town of Gongjin and centers around Yoon Hye-jin, a dentist from Seoul who moves to the countryside to start her own practice.
I absolutely loved watching how Hye-jin’s life started to connect with Du-sik’s – he’s basically Gongjin’s resident hero, everyone adores him! At first, they definitely clashed, but their paths kept crossing in the sweetest ways. But honestly, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha is so much more than just a cute romance. It really dives into important stuff like the power of community, family bonds, dealing with past mistakes, and learning to look beyond prejudice. It’s a really heartwarming show!
2. Alchemy of Souls
Where To Stream: Netflix
Costing around $30 million to produce, Alchemy of Souls is one of Studio Dragon’s most expensive dramas, and the investment clearly worked. The story takes place in the made-up land of Daeho and centers on Naksu, a famous assassin who desperately swaps bodies with a woman named Mu-Deok to escape death.
Naksu, who goes by Mu-deok, unexpectedly becomes involved with Jang-uk, the son of a powerful family in Daeho. Like Naksu, Jang-uk has a hidden past – his father blocked his magical abilities before leaving him as a child, preventing him from using spells. This creates an unusual dynamic where Mu-deok, despite being his servant, ends up teaching Jang-uk how to cast spells, effectively becoming his mentor in magic.
Even after two seasons and thirty episodes, Alchemy of Souls remains one of the best fantasy K-dramas available. It stands out with its compelling story, well-written script, captivating romance, and impressive production quality – including stunning sets, costumes, special effects, and a richly developed world and magic system.
1. Crash Landing on You
Where To Stream: Netflix
Some K-dramas immediately stand out as exceptional, and Crash Landing on You is definitely one of them. The story begins with a wildly improbable situation: a South Korean woman unexpectedly lands in North Korea while paragliding. Lost in enemy territory, Yoon Se-ri is fortunately found by Captain Ri Jeong-hyeok, who shelters her at his home while he figures out how to get her safely back to South Korea.
Se-ri, a wealthy heiress, celebrity, and businesswoman, finds herself completely out of place when she unexpectedly lands in North Korea. She must adjust to a much simpler and difficult life while also hiding who she really is. With stunning visuals, a beautiful soundtrack, and incredible chemistry between the main actors, Crash Landing on You has become a beloved K-drama classic, despite a few moments where the serious tone is interrupted by advertisements for Subway.
