For 15 seasons, Supernatural stayed consistently frightening thanks to its memorable monsters. The show followed Sam and Dean Winchester as they hunted creatures to keep people safe. While the story later expanded to include angels, demons, and even God, some of the most popular episodes focused on standalone monsters. These ‘Monster of the Week’ episodes were often the strongest, especially when Sam and Dean finally defeated the truly creepy creatures.
Over its 15 seasons, Supernatural featured some truly terrifying monsters, ranging from spooky creatures that prey on children to demons from Hell and even frightening clowns. Here’s a look at the creepiest ones.
8) Rakshasa

What truly makes the Rakshasa a frightening monster in Supernatural is its appearance as a clown. Like Stephen King understood with characters like Pennywise from IT, clowns are inherently unsettling, and even more so when revealed to be evil creatures who target people. The Rakshasa operates similarly, appearing roughly every 20 to 30 years to feed on humans. This particularly creepy demon clown debuted in Season 2 of Supernatural.
7) Hellhounds

Hellhounds are among the most terrifying creatures in Supernatural because they’re incredibly difficult to see. They appear when someone is about to die and aggressively drag them to Hell. When visible, they’re frightening, with glowing red eyes, sharp teeth, and a menacing growl. Once a Hellhound catches a human scent, it’s nearly impossible to stop, and they often travel in groups. The only way to defeat them usually involves powerful weapons like Angel Blades or the Colt.
6) Jefferson Starships

When it comes to naming creepy monsters on Supernatural, the Jefferson Starships definitely take the prize. For those who remember the classic rock band Jefferson Starship – or who share Dean’s musical tastes – you’ll recognize the reference. But Dean actually dislikes Jefferson Starship, considering them awful and persistent, which is exactly why he chose that name for these creatures. These monsters are a nasty mix: they have vampire fangs, wraith-like spines, and can even change their shape. As one of Dean’s least favorite monsters to hunt, the Jefferson Starships rightfully earn a place among the show’s most unsettling and irritating creatures.
5) Djinn

Djinn are frightening creatures from the show Supernatural, and their danger isn’t about their appearance. They’re the origin of genie myths – they grant wishes to those who find them, but always with a cruel twist. They manipulate wishes to cause torment, often leaving victims in a coma-like state so the Djinn can feed on them. These wish-granting monsters appeared throughout six seasons of Supernatural.
4) Changelings

The TV show Supernatural featured a frightening take on the Changeling myth from European folklore – creatures that swap themselves for human babies. The lore presented in the show is particularly disturbing: the Changeling’s mother devours the original child, and then the Changeling itself feeds on its adoptive mother. What makes these creatures truly terrifying is their appearance. They look like normal children, but their reflection reveals a monstrous face with empty eyes and a huge, toothy grin. These monsters debuted in Season 3, and the moment Sam and Dean discovered the Changeling mother had stolen and eaten human babies was genuinely chilling.
3) Leviathans

Throughout most of the seventh season of Supernatural, the Leviathans served as the main villains. These ancient creatures were the very first beings God made, even predating the Angels. They were incredibly powerful and dangerous, so God created Purgatory as a prison to contain them. Visually, they were terrifying monsters, characterized by a massive mouth filled with sharp teeth and a grotesque tongue. Defeating them was also incredibly difficult, as they could only be killed by a uniquely crafted weapon that was nearly impossible to make due to its rare and complex ingredients.
2) Rugaru

The Rugaru is a particularly haunting creature from Supernatural, and its story is incredibly sad. These are ordinary people who live normal lives until their 30th birthday, when they transform into monstrous beings driven by uncontrollable hunger. Tragically, they become predators, often turning on the people they care about most. What makes the Rugaru so heartbreaking is that no one has ever escaped this fate, no matter how kind they were before the curse took hold. Sam and Dean encountered a Rugaru in Season 4 who desperately didn’t want to become a monster and ultimately sacrificed himself to protect his family.
1) Shtriga

The Shtriga is a truly frightening creature from the TV show Supernatural, and ranks among the scariest monsters the show has ever featured. Based on Albanian folklore, Shtrigas are similar to witches, but instead of casting spells, they drain the life force from humans. This slowly kills their victims, and the Shtriga can continue feeding indefinitely, moving from person to person. In Supernatural, these creatures specifically target children, weakening them over time to prolong their own lives. These monsters appeared in Season 1 and were particularly terrifying.
