Stepping into another world filled with magic and dragons has always been an irresistible allure, a realm that exists beyond mere imagination. For a long time, only cinemas offered the chance to immerse oneself in a live-action or animated fantasy tale without compromises. The success of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy was due largely to its innovative approach to J.R.R. Tolkien’s original work. However, in the 2010s, television started to rival movies in delivering impressive adaptations worthy of “The Lord of the Rings.” Shows like “Game of Thrones” became a cultural phenomenon, paving the way for numerous other series.
Despite some fantasy TV shows being prematurely cancelled amidst the surge of streaming content, there’s no shortage of new ones on their way. Here are eight upcoming series that have already sparked plenty of anticipation.
8) God of War
Adaptations of video games often face criticism, but they’re beginning to improve their reputation. HBO’s controversial second season of The Last of Us remains popular. In a similar vein, Amazon Prime Video plans to imitate HBO by transforming the acclaimed God of War series into live-action for the first time. Although the show’s release date hasn’t been announced yet, showrunner Ronald D. Moore has confirmed that it will focus on Kratos’ battles against the Norse gods.
7) Fourth Wing
The novel “Fourth Wing” by Rebecca Yarros quickly establishes itself with great momentum, much like a young dragon rider named Violet Sorrengail. Soon after its publication, the story was snapped up for a multi-part series by Michael B. Jordan’s production company, Outlier Society, and Amazon MGM Studios. As the initial installment of a proposed five-book series, there is ample material to explore creatively.
6) Assassin’s Creed
Netflix has a hand in various ventures, one of which is video game adaptations. They’re developing a live-action series based on Assassin’s Creed, hoping to rectify the shortcomings of the 2016 film. As for the plot, it remains unclear. However, it will likely unfold during a significant period in history where there may be fewer antagonists lurking about.
5) A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my excitement about HBO’s decision to continue exploring the captivating world of Westeros despite the mixed feelings about the ending of “Game of Thrones”. The network’s faith in the series led to the creation of “House of the Dragon”, a thrilling prequel set centuries before Robert’s Rebellion, which has already gained massive popularity. Now, another spinoff titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is on its way, offering a fresh perspective with a focus on a single knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his squire, Egg. This upcoming series promises to present an intriguing tale with lower stakes compared to its predecessors.
4) Harry Potter
The Harry Potter book collection significantly elevated the fantasy genre to unprecedented popularity, demonstrating its universal appeal to readers of all ages. This widespread acclaim led to a successful movie series. However, attempts to extend the Harry Potter storyline on the big screen didn’t fare well. With nothing else left to explore, a reboot is in the works and scheduled for release on HBO Max in 2027. The new interpretation aims to distinguish itself by delving deeper into the narrative than the films did.
3) A Court of Thorns and Roses
Unlike most shows listed here, the “A Court of Thorns and Roses” TV series, derived from Sarah J. Maas’ best-selling book series, is currently not in active production. However, it was once in development, and with Maas still seeking a new network for the project, it seems inevitable that it will resume at some point. In due time, Maas will likely find a suitable collaborator to bring Feyre Archeron’s adventures back to life on screen. It’s only a matter of when, not if, these enchanting stories move beyond the pages of the books.
2) Magic: The Gathering
It’s not just books where you can explore fantastical realms suitable for adaptation; even the popular trading card game “Magic: The Gathering” is set to debut an animated series on Netflix! This series aims to capture the rich mythology of the game faithfully. Although all scripts are prepared, the animation process may take some time. In the interim, enthusiasts can keep enjoying the game and even craft their unique tales.
1) Talamasca: The Secret Order
AMC is making its mark in the realm of fantasy by bringing Anne Rice’s novels to life, starting with “Interview With a Vampire.” In 2025, they are set to unveil their third series, titled “Talamasca: The Secret Order,” which centers around a covert group that monitors supernatural beings. No creature will be able to stir up trouble without being spotted by this all-seeing entity.
