8 Years Ago, Marvel Fans Got Their Biggest Wish for the MCU (But It Still Hasn’t Happened Yet)

Marvel Studios often takes fan suggestions into account, and they did so when making Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Knowing the movie would explore different realities, they wanted to assemble a powerful Illuminati group. A popular fan choice, Mister Fantastic, made the cut, and John Krasinski was able to briefly play Reed Richards. While Krasinski wasn’t intended to be a long-term member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was a fun chance for him to join the superhero world.

A similar opportunity arose in the movie Deadpool & Wolverine. Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, and the writers realized they could fulfill many fans’ hopes by including Henry Cavill as a version of Wolverine. Like before, it wasn’t suggested that Cavill would become the main Wolverine going forward, but it showed what could happen. However, this brief appearance feels a bit frustrating for Marvel fans, who have been eagerly waiting for eight years to see their biggest wish – a Wolverine appearance – finally come true.

Marvel Became Whole Again in 2017

When the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) began in 2008, it faced a significant challenge. While the first film, Iron Man, was well-received, it didn’t have the same immediate impact as popular movies like Spider-Man or X-Men. This was because characters like Spider-Man and Wolverine were already more well-known. However, Marvel Studios couldn’t use those characters in their films because the rights belonged to other companies. Despite this setback, the MCU continued to succeed, releasing a string of popular movies and turning its own characters into global icons.

2017 was shaping up to be an amazing year for Marvel. We were all so hyped for Avengers: Infinity War – it felt like everything the MCU had been building towards! While Kevin Feige and the team were putting the finishing touches on that epic, Disney was pulling off something huge behind the scenes. They announced they were buying 20th Century Fox, a major studio with the rights to properties like the X-Men and Fantastic Four. Of course, everyone immediately started wondering when we’d finally see the X-Men join the MCU, and while it’s taken a while, it feels closer than ever now!

The Wait for the X-Men Is Almost Over

Now that Marvel Studios has reacquired the rights to characters from Fox, they’ve been gradually adding them into their movies and shows. We’ve seen Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and a movie dedicated to the Fantastic Four is coming soon. However, the X-Men haven’t had a big team-up yet. While some X-Men members will appear in Deadpool & Wolverine, they won’t be forming a traditional team – instead, they’re joining forces with others to battle Cassandra Nova. But with an even more powerful villain, Doctor Doom, emerging, the X-Men will finally have to unite and fight for what’s right.

The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday will bring back some familiar faces from the X-Men films, with Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and James Marsden returning to their iconic roles as a one-time appearance within the film’s multiverse storyline. While fans are excited to see them again, they’re really hoping for a new, ongoing X-Men team. Luckily, a complete reboot of the X-Men is already being developed by Jake Schreier, the director of Thunderbolts. Although a release date hasn’t been announced, once Doomsday is released, the wait for the reboot will begin – and it’s expected to be shorter than the long wait fans experienced before Doomsday.
