8 Years Ago Today, Dwayne Johnson Revived A Classic 1990s Franchise & There’s Finally Another Sequel Coming

Dwayne Johnson is known in Hollywood as a guaranteed box office draw, especially for action movies. When a franchise starts to decline, he’s often brought in to revitalize it with his energy and star power. Even though he and Vin Diesel have had their differences, the Fast & Furious series likely wouldn’t be continuing with an eleventh film if Johnson hadn’t significantly boosted its success starting with Fast Five. Similarly, he played a key role in trying to refresh the DC Extended Universe with his role in Black Adam.

It’s clear that Dwayne Johnson genuinely enjoys playing more vulnerable, underdog characters—those who blossom into heroes—more than he does portraying tough agents or villains. He got the chance to play this type of role because he took a risk on a well-known series that was trying to make a comeback after almost 25 years. Fortunately, his gamble paid off, with the first two installments being a huge success, and he’s now preparing for a third film that aims to take the series to new heights.

Dwayne Johnson Led a Stacked Cast in a 2017 Action-Adventure Movie

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a follow-up to the original 1995 movie with Robin Williams and Kirsten Dunst. In the first film, a board game came to life, and kids had to stop it with the help of Alan Parrish. This new movie features a video game version of Jumanji. Instead of the game’s dangers coming into the real world, a group of teenagers are pulled into the game and inhabit game characters (avatars). Spencer is lucky because he gets to control a strong and capable character played by Dwayne Johnson. Through the experience, Spencer gains confidence and learns to use his intelligence to help his friends beat the game and return home.

The fun doesn’t last forever, and in the sequel, Spencer feels himself and his friends growing distant, so he returns to Jumanji. The others follow, but they all transform into different game characters, making things more difficult. As before, the group has to learn to cooperate to save Jumanji, this time from a severe drought. They finally escape the game and try to get back to normal life, only to discover virtual creatures have followed them into the real world. The movie ends on a cliffhanger that hints at another exciting adventure, but it’s taking a while to come to fruition.

Jumanji Is Finally Ready for Its Final Level

The movie The Next Level earned over $800 million worldwide in 2019, leading many to expect a sequel soon after. While a second film was announced in 2020, it took time to coordinate schedules. Dwayne Johnson and his fellow stars – Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan – are all incredibly busy actors. Now, however, everyone’s availability lines up, and they are currently filming what will be the last Jumanji movie.

Sony isn’t revealing much about the story yet, but Dwayne Johnson hinted back in 2019 that the character who controls Jurgen the Brutal might be important in the upcoming sequel. It’s possible plans have changed during the five-year break, giving the writers time to refine the script and create what they hope will be a satisfying conclusion to the series. Either way, fans will be happy to see Johnson and the original cast reunited for one final adventure.
