By the late 2010s, the Marvel Cinematic Universe had become the most successful movie franchise of the time, consistently delivering blockbuster hits. It didn’t matter if the film featured a well-known hero like Spider-Man or a lesser-known team like the Guardians of the Galaxy – almost everything Marvel made was a huge success. Many people thought Marvel had already reached its peak, but the MCU still had surprises in store. In 2018, Marvel released a film that broke records and achieved unprecedented success.
This isn’t about Avengers: Infinity War. Black Panther premiered on February 16, 2018, and while it was originally intended to lead into Infinity War, it quickly became the biggest movie of the year. It surpassed all expectations and became a landmark film.
Black Panther Broke Several Box Office Records

Chadwick Boseman first appeared as Black Panther a couple of years before the release of the solo Black Panther movie, making a strong impression in Captain America: Civil War. This sparked excitement for his own film, though few anticipated its massive success. Black Panther received widespread praise and broke records, earning $202 million domestically during its opening weekend – the highest February opening ever. Including the Presidents Day weekend, the film made a total of $242.1 million in the United States.
Black Panther was a massive financial success, earning $700 million in the U.S. and $1.346 billion worldwide. It was the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film to reach $700 million domestically, a milestone later achieved by only Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film surpassed the domestic earnings of Infinity War and was the highest-grossing movie of 2018. Globally, Black Panther was the first Marvel movie without any of the original Avengers to earn over $1 billion, proving the MCU could succeed with new characters. It’s also the highest-grossing film ever directed by a Black director, both in the U.S. and worldwide, slightly surpassing the earnings of The Fate of the Furious.
Black Panther wasn’t just a box office success; it also received widespread critical acclaim, earning the highest Rotten Tomatoes score of any Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film (96%). It even made history at the Oscars, winning three awards for its original score, production design, and costume design. But perhaps its biggest achievement came with its Best Picture nomination – a first for any superhero movie. This showed that the Academy was willing to recognize a popular, blockbuster film for its artistic merit and cultural impact, proving it could connect with audiences worldwide.
The incredible success of Black Panther, both with audiences and critics, makes it a landmark film. While high box office numbers don’t always mean a movie is good, Black Panther proved that when a film truly resonates with people. It’s not just a great superhero movie—it’s a genuinely great film, and its record-breaking performance is well-deserved. Black Panther was a defining moment for Hollywood, and it’s set a high bar that few films have come close to reaching—even its own sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, didn’t quite measure up.
The Legacy of Black Panther Continues To Be Felt in the MCU

Black Panther wasn’t just another big-budget superhero movie; it was a cultural milestone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it didn’t directly impact the overall Infinity Saga storyline, its importance lay in its impact on fans and the wider world. Though there had been comic book movies with Black leads before, like Blade, Black Panther was the first MCU film to truly center an African-American character. This was a long-awaited and important step for representation in Hollywood blockbusters. The film’s huge success proved that audiences around the world were eager for diverse superhero stories, challenging previous assumptions about the marketability of Black-led films.
What makes Black Panther stand out is how it tells its story. The film tackles important and timely social issues in a way that feels both personal and relatable. Despite being a large-scale superhero blockbuster, director Ryan Coogler crafted a story about the Black experience that, like his film Creed, felt deeply human. This depth is a major reason why Killmonger is considered one of the best villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He wasn’t simply a bad guy; he was a complex character with a powerful message that resonated with audiences, even if they didn’t agree with his actions.
It’s difficult to picture Black Panther achieving the same level of success without Chadwick Boseman. He was the ideal actor to play T’Challa, captivating audiences with his powerful and dignified performance. Boseman was poised to become a leading figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Endgame, but sadly passed away in 2020 after privately battling colon cancer. Though his time as the Black Panther was tragically short, his impact continues to be felt. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was created as a heartfelt tribute to Boseman and the mark he left on everyone involved. While there’s speculation Marvel might eventually recast T’Challa, it’s easy to see why they haven’t – Boseman became so closely associated with the character that replacing him feels impossible.
As the Multiverse Saga nears its conclusion, the impact of Black Panther is still clearly felt. Characters from Wakanda, including Shuri and M’Baku, played a significant role in the latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday. The marketing for Doomsday has focused on beloved, established Marvel characters like Steve Rogers, Thor, and the X-Men, and the inclusion of Wakanda shows just how important Black Panther has become to fans and to Marvel as a whole. It’s now one of Marvel’s most valuable franchises, and it’s expected to remain popular for years to come.
