8 Years Later, Avengers Star Reveals Controversial MCU Scene Is One of Its Most Important

As much as I adore the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s definitely seen its share of fan backlash. I remember the uproar over Iron Man 3 and the Mandarin twist – which, looking back, actually gave us a fantastic character! And Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness didn’t deliver the endless cameos everyone expected, causing a lot of disappointment. But sometimes, it’s not even an entire movie or storyline that gets fans riled up. It can be a single scene, or even just a moment within a scene, that sparks outrage and becomes a long-running joke online – something Chris Pratt knows all too well, apparently!

Chris Pratt was already well-known as Peter Quill/Star-Lord after appearing in two Marvel films, but his role in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War sparked controversy among fans. In the movie, a plan to defeat Thanos on Titan goes wrong when Quill learns Gamora is dead, and his reaction ultimately leads to devastating consequences – many fans believe his actions caused the loss of half the universe’s life. However, Pratt himself views the situation differently.

Chris Pratt Reflects on Star-Lord’s Controversial Infinity War Scene

In a recent interview with Out of Order, Chris Pratt discussed the emotional impact of his character’s storyline in Avengers: Infinity War. He talked about his initial reaction to the scene and how it resonated with Marvel fans, even influencing the character’s future development. Pratt admitted his perspective on the scene has changed over time. Filming Infinity War and Endgame felt very different from his experience with the Guardians of the Galaxy films, largely due to the shorter shooting schedule and the absence of director James Gunn.

Chris Pratt explained he was there to support his Avengers co-stars, even though he only filmed for a total of twenty days across both movies. He praised the Russo brothers, the directors, for being collaborative and letting the actors contribute to the story and character development. He also pointed out that this was the first time he’d played Star-Lord without James Gunn directing, and he felt a difference as a result.

Pratt observed that viewers strongly criticize Quill for his actions in that scene, specifically how letting his personal feelings about Thanos risk the whole plan.

Chris Pratt talked about the strong reactions people had to his character’s actions in the movie, specifically how they blamed him for Iron Man’s death. He said people would even confront him in public, asking why his character made that choice. Pratt explained that he felt unfairly criticized, and pointed out that if he hadn’t acted as he did, the resulting movie—which actually consists of two films—would have been much shorter and less impactful. He emphasized that the moment was crucial to the story, saying, ‘Without that, there’s no movie!’

Looking back, I realize how much impact the events surrounding Quill had on the character, and I feel the weight of that now. While I’m glad it happened, I didn’t foresee it becoming so iconic – I don’t think anyone did.

It’s worth noting that Pratt is correct – that moment was crucial for Peter Quill’s development in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, especially as he came to terms with the loss of the Gamora he knew and accepted that the Gamora in the sequel was a different person. Plus, the story isn’t over yet, as Marvel has hinted at the return of Star-Lord to the MCU in the future.
