Netflix has delivered some strong thrillers lately, particularly those dealing with intense and challenging themes. Their newest film is already a hit, quickly climbing to number 6 on the Top 10 list and featuring a compelling story and talented actors that are drawing viewers in.
The thriller 10×10, featuring Luke Evans and Kelly Reilly, follows Lewis, who seems like a normal man but is secretly driven by a desire for revenge. He kidnaps Cathy and holds her captive in a soundproof room at his home, determined to uncover a hidden secret from her past.
It’s Not Your Straightforward Abduction Thriller
Although 10×10 isn’t a prize-winning film, critics generally gave it a 67% rating. The main criticism was that the characters lacked depth and the storyline felt underdeveloped. However, the performances of Evans and Reilly were widely praised for saving the movie. According to Jason Best of Movie Talk, first-time director Suzi Ewing skillfully built tension despite the weak foundation, staging the action with a raw and impactful style, and the two leads did their best to make their flawed characters believable.
One of the film’s strengths is its quick pace. 10×10 is very tightly constructed, and despite appearing to be a typical abduction thriller at first, it doesn’t waste a moment of its 88 minutes. This creates a consistently tense and anxious atmosphere. According to Noel Murray of the Los Angeles Times, the film manages to be engaging despite limited settings and a simple story because the plot is full of surprises, starting with a shocking violent opening and culminating in a complex and morally ambiguous final fight. What seems like a straightforward thriller actually becomes a clash between sociopaths, each believing in their own justification and hoping their deception won’t be exposed. Ultimately, whether you enjoy the movie will depend on how well you accept its many twists, but it’s a solid choice for a night in.
