Blue Dot Games has announced that their Cold War-era first-person shooter, ’83, will be available to play in Early Access on PC through Steam starting April 23rd.
When the game launches in Early Access, it will feature three maps, each with two different ways to play. Players will be able to choose between two factions, both equipped with tanks and jeeps, and will have access to over a dozen weapons for each faction. The core gameplay elements, like commanding officers and squad leaders, are already implemented. The complete game is expected to be released between mid and late 2027.
According to Blue Dot Games CEO Tony Gillham, their goal with the game ’83 was to create a historically accurate shooter that’s also enjoyable for everyone. They focused on ‘accessible realism,’ meaning they thoroughly researched details like uniforms and gun sounds. While the game is easy to pick up, success still requires teamwork and fulfilling specific roles. Experienced players can take on Commander and Squad Leader positions to guide their team, while new players can learn as they go. Despite being accessible, ’83 isn’t a walk in the park – effective communication and coordination are key to winning.
Here is an overview of the game, via Blue Dot Games:
‘83 takes place in a 1983 where the Cold War turned into a full-scale war. It’s created by Blue Dot Games, which includes developers from the team behind Rising Storm 2: Vietnam. To celebrate the announcement of its Early Access release date, Blue Dot Games has released a new trailer, expanding on the footage shown at the Galaxies Showcase.
In 83, you play as a soldier in an alternate Cold War scenario. The game features large-scale 40v40 battles with realistic weapons, vehicles, and team-based goals. Success depends on coordinating with your teammates, capturing key locations, and using smart tactics to control the battlefield.
’83’ aims for ‘accessible realism,’ meaning it tries to realistically simulate historical battles without taking up too much of your time. Matches typically last 30-40 minutes, and when you’re eliminated, you quickly respawn. While respawning is fast, every moment counts because ’83’ heavily emphasizes communication and teamwork. Players rely on Team Commanders to strategically organize their side and make critical decisions that can change the course of the battle.
Players can choose from diverse roles like infantry, vehicle crews, and support specialists, each with unique gear and strategic importance. The game, ‘83‘, features historically accurate weapons and equipment that handle and perform realistically. Every weapon is carefully modeled and animated to match its real-world counterpart, and behaves authentically – barrels and silencers can overheat with rapid fire, machine guns need stability for accurate shots, and reloads aren’t instant when you still have bullets in the magazine. ‘83‘ emphasizes realism, teamwork, and large-scale immersion, delivering a gritty, realistic experience set against the backdrop of a world on the brink of nuclear war.
