Everyone who loves The Wizard of Oz remembers its famous scenes – the songs like “Over the Rainbow” and “Follow the Yellow Brick Road,” Dorothy’s ruby slippers, and the melting of the Wicked Witch. But one moment is both funny and a little creepy, and now, 86 years later, the new musical Wicked: For Good offers the perfect answer to it – and fans are going wild over it!
Margaret Hamilton’s portrayal of the Wicked Witch in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz is unforgettable, largely thanks to her incredibly iconic and delightfully evil laugh. It’s a sound that’s become synonymous with the character over the years. The new musical, Wicked: For Good, honors Hamilton’s performance by referencing that famous laugh, but in a surprising way.
It’s Glinda, Not Elphaba Who Has a Wicked Laugh
In the movie Wicked: For Good, Glinda (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) have a falling out after Elphaba’s sister, Nessarose (Marissa Bode), dies. Nessarose is accidentally crushed when a house falls on her, orchestrated by Madame Morrible. Glinda then gives Nessarose’s silver shoes to Dorothy, hoping the Wizard will help her return home. This enrages Elphaba, and the two begin to argue. Though their fight is funny – it’s energetic but not a serious battle – it’s Glinda’s actions during the fight that really make the audience laugh.

During a confrontation, Glinda playfully imitates the Wicked Witch’s famous laugh, complete with a dismissive wave, and then asks, “Please. Where’d you get that?” This moment both highlights Glinda questioning Elphaba’s attempt at an evil laugh and pays tribute to the original performance in The Wizard of Oz. Fans online have shared how the audience erupted in laughter when Glinda did the imitation, with many calling it the funniest part of the movie. Interestingly, Elphaba herself seems to crack a smile after Glinda’s impression.
Could Glinda’s Laugh Be a Call Back to Wicked As Well?

Fans have noticed a funny connection in the musical Wicked. When Glinda imitates the Wicked Witch’s laugh, it’s actually Elphaba causing her to laugh – a moment ironic considering Glinda tells Elphaba not to make her laugh earlier in the song “Popular.” During that scene, Glinda is teaching Elphaba how to succeed in Oz by becoming popular. She asks if famous people were intelligent, but quickly interrupts Elphaba to say “don’t make me laugh,” emphasizing that popularity, not brains, is what matters.
In Wicked: For Good, Elphaba and Glinda clash because Elphaba prioritizes truth and intelligence while Glinda seeks popularity. When Elphaba tries to reveal the Wizard’s deception, it essentially makes Glinda the butt of the joke. This is a compelling interpretation of the scene and cleverly connects Wicked: For Good back to the original story of The Wizard of Oz.
Wicked: For Good is in theaters now.
