The movie Wicked: For Good had a very successful opening weekend, earning nearly $150 million. This film tells the backstory of the characters Elphaba and Glinda, offering a new perspective on the classic story of The Wizard of Oz. While the original 1939 film introduced audiences to Dorothy and her journey home, this new film is causing some fans to question her actions and see the Wizard in a different light.
Please be aware that this article contains spoilers for the movie Wicked: For Good. Both the original and recent Wicked films reveal that the Wicked Witch of the West wasn’t actually evil. Elphaba was simply trying to protect animals, while the Wizard of Oz manipulated the situation to create a common enemy and unite his people. Dorothy was unknowingly used as part of this plan, and the Wizard instructed her to kill the witch so she could return home. Many fans are now expressing their disapproval of Dorothy Gale, and you can find their reactions online.
Cowardly lion you’re bones. And Dorothy is a terrorist

Are you seriously saying that Dorothy heard Elphaba and Glinda share such a heartfelt and emotional song like ‘For Good,’ and then still wanted to harm Elphaba? That’s incredibly selfish and cruel.

Okay, seriously, watching ‘No Good Deed,’ I had this amazing thought: the second half of the movie would have been perfect as a fast-paced montage of Elphaba just unleashing her wicked side on Dorothy and everyone else along the Yellow Brick Road. Imagine her really going for it! It would have been so much fun to see! #WickedForGood

Surrender Dorothy
Beyond discovering that Dorothy was merely used by the Wizard in the world of Wicked, the musical reimagines the origins of other beloved characters from The Wizard of Oz. The Scarecrow is actually Fiyero, a soldier who was engaged to Glinda but fell in love with Elphaba. To protect him, Elphaba transformed him into a man made of straw. Similarly, the Lion and the Tin Man were revealed to have past connections; the Tin Man was Boq, a Munchkin who was essentially held captive by Elphaba’s sister, Nessa.
In the musical Wicked, the Tin Man isn’t the cheerful character many remember. He’s transformed into a man made of tin because Nessa uses magic to try and win Boq’s affection, leaving him angry and resentful. The Cowardly Lion also appears, and he holds the Witch responsible for his timidity, claiming she’s the reason he’s a coward. While characters express frustration with Dorothy, she remains unaware of the Wizard’s schemes throughout the story – at least, as far as the audience can tell. Dorothy is mentioned and even briefly seen, but never fully shown on screen. This choice keeps the focus on Glinda and Elphaba’s story, but it doesn’t fully restore Dorothy’s good name in these new Oz films.
