Be warned, this contains spoilers for season 1, episode 6 of 9-1-1: Nashville! The show’s creator, Rashad Raisani, has explained the heartbreaking real-life event that inspired a storyline in the episode. In the episode, Cammie guides someone through performing the Heimlich maneuver on themselves via video call. This scene was particularly meaningful because Cammie later shared that her husband had choked to death right in front of her, making the situation deeply personal for her character.
In an interview with TVLine, actor Raisani shared that the tragic death of Cammie’s husband on 9-1-1: Nashville was based on a real-life incident. While scouting locations in Nashville, Raisani and executive producer Brad Buecker witnessed a woman tragically die from choking at a nightclub restaurant. The experience deeply affected them both and ultimately served as the foundation for Cammie’s difficult past.
The idea for that storyline came from a real experience I had while scouting locations in Nashville with the pilot’s director, Brad Buecker. We were in a restaurant with live music when someone suddenly started yelling to stop the band. When the lights came on, we saw a woman had unexpectedly died at her table – she’d choked while having dinner with her friends and husband. What struck me was that no one, including us, had realized anything was wrong. They were experiencing this incredibly dramatic moment, and it was happening right in front of us unnoticed. When we were developing Cammie’s character and thinking about how she transitioned from a life in music to working as a 911 dispatcher, Brad and I both felt this event was the key. She likely felt powerless in that moment, and the fact that she couldn’t even get through on 911 probably fueled her desire to become a dispatcher herself. That feeling of helplessness is what ultimately motivated her career change.
This episode gives us the first real glimpse into Cammie’s personal life, particularly surrounding this case. Throughout the series, the show has kept her past a secret, but now, after helping with a medical emergency, she’s starting to confront the grief over her husband’s death.
While choking deaths aren’t common in the U.S., they unfortunately occur daily. The National Safety Council reports that in 2022, choking was the fourth leading cause of accidental death, claiming the lives of 5,553 people. Age is a significant factor, as most who die from choking are over 71 years old.
Cammie’s husband represents a surprisingly common, though unfortunate, situation. The frightening choking incident in the episode clearly affected her, bringing up painful memories. Because this is the first time we’ve seen her this vulnerable, it creates an opportunity to learn much more about her character and her past.
Cammie has become a recurring character on 9-1-1: Nashville. She first appeared as a crossover character during the ninth season, helping launch a multi-part story arc. In addition to her work as a first responder, Cammie is involved in the music industry, and viewers will see her perform on screen in both the ninth episode and a future episode, according to actor Raisani.
I’m really excited to see what happens with Cammie on 9-1-1: Nashville! It looks like they’re going to give her a bigger role in the show, which is fantastic. I’m definitely wondering if the scary choking incident will be something she continues to deal with, or if she’ll try to keep it bottled up like she did before the midseason finale. I’m on the edge of my seat to find out!
