At first sight, “Primitve War” might appear as a frivolous concept, but it skillfully juggles two genres: war drama based on the Vietnam War and sci-fi action thriller. In 1968, the story unfolds in a distant, secluded region of Vietnam where a band of American soldiers stumble upon dinosaurs still inhabiting the area. The movie’s creator, writer-director Luke Sparke, recently spoke with ComicBook at San Diego Comic-Con about how they manage this balancing act, alongside key cast members. Actor Jeremy Piven emphasized that real-time on-set editing was crucial in helping the actors fully immerse themselves in this unique world.
In simpler terms, “If this movie doesn’t work as a war film, then people won’t be interested in anything else,” Piven stated. “Therefore, it’s important to create an attractive setup. Just by looking at some of the early edits, the scenes looked rich and inspiring.
As I delve into the world of “Sparke,” I find myself placing my faith in the source material to steer us true. It’s a cinematic rendition inspired by Ethan Pettus’ 2017 novel bearing the same title, a collaboration that Sparke and Pettus worked on together to script it onto the silver screen. I can tell you firsthand that he dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the characters, giving each their due time and space for their arcs within the movie to unfold and reach resolution. He believed that this focus would be instrumental in creating an authentic experience, even amidst its most outrageous jump-scares and monster-filled moments.
When Sparkle spoke, he emphasized his intention was to remain as true as possible to the original work. “It’s a book with cult status,” he explained, “so I don’t presume everyone has read it, but there is a dedicated fan base. That’s why, when adapting it, my priority wasn’t to introduce new twists or changes; instead, I wanted to stay true to the source material. As a fan myself, I dislike it when my favorite series or games deviate from their original forms.
In Spark’s own words, “I aimed to maintain authenticity while I could, yet manage a narrative that involves multiple characters, around seven or eight, even nine. The story needed to be structured in such a way that each character receives adequate development, allowing the audience to empathize with them when they face challenging situations.” This was the main overarching theme guiding Spark’s writing process.
The pioneering Australian film titled Primitive War is making its grand debut at SDCC, followed by a nationwide release in U.S. cinemas through Fathom Entertainment. Catch it at participating theaters from August 21st to August 25th, and tickets are already available for purchase.
