In Peacemaker season 1, Christopher Smith (John Cena) offhandedly comments, “Ever since I started working alongside Matter-Eater Lad, my perception of normalcy has become a bit skewed.” He recounts an incident where he witnessed Matter-Eater Lad consuming an entire Wendy’s restaurant because they were slow with his fries. Although Smith is known for spinning tall tales about other superheroes like Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Green Arrow, it appears that Matter-Eater Lad does indeed exist in the revamped DC Universe.
In a nutshell, James Gunn clarified on the Peacemaker podcast that Matter-Eater Lad belongs to the Legion of Super-Heroes, implying he hails from the future. He’s not part of our current era.
In simpler terms, Gunn stated that the character might have traveled from the past to be with Peacemaker and enjoy Wendy’s, or he could be another character altogether who currently exists. However, Gunn is open to the idea of introducing a character like Matter-Eater Lad into the storyline, as we can find a way to accommodate him in our current timeline.
Due to the fact that the first season of Peacemaker introduced a variety of supervillains from Batman’s circle, including well-known ones like the Riddler, the Mad Hatter, and the Joker, as well as lesser-known characters such as Doll Man, Kite-Man, and Bat-Mite, creators James Gunn, Jennifer Holland (who plays Emilia Harcourt), and Steve Agee (who portrays John Economos) have addressed whether these characters are already established within the same universe that encompasses Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker.
On the podcast, Gunn clarified that Doll Man is considered part of the established storyline (or canon), while Bat-Mite may not be. He also emphasized that the Justice League exists in a different realm within the narrative. This was explained to Freddie Stroma, who was joining the podcast for the first time as Adrian Chase/Vigilante.
In the world of comics, Tenzil Kem is known as Matter-Eater Lad, originating from the planet Bismoll in the year 3000. This character was introduced by Jerry Siegel, a co-creator of Superman, and John Forte, an artist for the Legion of Super-Heroes, in Adventure Comics issue #303 published in 1962. Tenzil Kem became a member of this legendary team which also included Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, Sun Boy, Lightning Lad, Bouncing Boy, Chameleon Boy, and Brainiac 5, who are all potential inhabitants from the distant future of the DC Universe.
As a cinephile reflecting on my recent cinematic journey, I must share my thoughts on the intriguing dynamics between Superboy, a precocious Clark Kent, and the time-traveling denizens of the 30th Century. In Gunn’s latest Superman flick, however, it becomes evident that our DC Universe’s Superman (David Corenswet) chose not to unveil himself to the world until three years prior to the storyline’s events – approximately 300 years after humans first encountered metahumans.
The second season of the show “Peacemaker,” featuring recurring actors like John Cena, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick, along with fresh faces such as Frank Grillo, David Denman, Sol Rodriguez, and Tim Meadows, is set to debut on HBO Max on August 21.
