Who Do ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Stars Think Died in That Explosion Before Season 22?

Fans of Grey’s Anatomy are speculating on which characters perished in the hospital blast, yet it’s intriguing to ponder which actors may not reappear when season 22 unfolds.

During separate chats with Us Weekly at the Motion Picture & Television Fund NextGen Annual Summer Party on June 22nd, Camilla Luddington and Harry Shum Jr. shared their thoughts on that surprising plot twist.

As a lifestyle expert, I find myself in a curious predicament. A whirlwind of messages has been flooding my inbox from an array of cast members, all asking for my take on the astonishing season 21 finale. Luddington, at 41 years old, playfully hinted that even we, the inner circle, are left guessing. The suspense is palpable – no one knows, not a soul, and that’s downright terrifying!

As the devoted fan who’s been following Dr. Jo Wilson’s journey since season 9, let me tell you, I can’t help but worry about her future. Each new season brings fresh uncertainties, and I find myself thinking, “What if this is it for Jo?” We’ve seen so much, we know so much, and it’s a constant reminder that the stakes are high.

Shum Jr., 43, meanwhile, has a creative theory to keep everyone safe.

‘Perhaps it’s not me. Maybe it’s a strange occurrence where it seems to be happening in someone’s mind.’ He was uncertain, but he didn’t believe this scenario was likely. We’ll have to wait and find out.

In the final episode of ABC’s popular series in May, Piper Perabo acted as a mother desperate enough to bring a volatile acetylene tank into the operating theater, compelling Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) to carry out a perilous operation to save her child. This hostage crisis additionally endangered interns Simone (Alexis Floyd) and Adams (Niko Terho), with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) attempting a rescue, but unfortunately coming too late.

Although the procedure went well, unfortunately, someone inadvertently opened the tank, causing its volatile contents to spill onto the operation area. The dramatic climax of the final episode depicted an explosion; at this point, only Meredith and Warren (played by Jason George) were confirmed to have survived – though that may not be the end of their story.

Following his debut in season 19, playing Dr. Benson “Blue” Kwan on Grey’s Anatomy, Shum Jr. expressed his apprehension regarding his tenure on the series.

When the authors say, “I need to talk to you about something,” it’s usually met with a sense of apprehension. But, that’s what makes it exciting. I believe that’s why people are drawn to it. This time around, everyone I’ve interacted with – even die-hard fans who have approached me – have expressed that this was a cliffhanger like none they’ve experienced before. That speaks volumes. There are many cliffhangers they’ve faced. So, it was refreshing to hear their reactions.

Audience members are eagerly anticipating the upcoming season 22 this fall to discover which characters survive and which ones perish. However, there are a few other mysteries they’re keen on resolving as well, such as Jo’s announcement about her unexpected pregnancy to her husband Dr. Atticus Lincoln (Chris Carmack) that still needs clarification.

Luddington expressed his concern, ‘I really hope he’s safe.’ As for any potential injuries and their severity, he admitted, ‘I’m in the dark about it.’ This uncertainty seems to be weighing heavily on him.

She expressed her concern: “I truly wish my screen partner is alright, as they both will require mutual support during this tough time. Given their situation, his well-being could potentially complicate matters significantly, especially considering they have four children in total.

Prior to resuming filming for season 22, Luddington and Shum Jr. made an appearance to lend their support to the Motion Picture and Television Fund.

In a recent statement, Luddington emphasized that we frequently identify as an industry. This association underscores our unity within our community, especially during challenging times such as crises. Today, we’re focused on wildfire relief efforts. However, I recall instances like the strikes and the COVID-19 pandemic when this organization offered crucial mental health services and housing assistance to those in need. I believe it’s essential to support each other, particularly when someone is standing by us all.

Shum Jr. emphasized the “method of returning favor to the creative professionals in the industry,” stating, “One crucial aspect when you join this field is always remembering to look out for your peers. In moments when I required assistance, it was the support system that mattered. Whether it’s through MPTF or simply being surrounded by people willing to extend a helping hand to help you overcome obstacles. Because being an artist is challenging enough as it is.
