Shelby Oaks Trailer Reveals First Footage From Chris Stuckmann’s Horror Movie

The promotional video for the horror movie “Shelby Oaks,” Chris Stuckmann’s first feature film as director, has been unveiled by NEON. This production company bought Stuckmann’s crowd-funded project prior to its debut at Montreal’s Fantasia Fest in July 2024. Mike Flanagan, known for “Doctor Sleep” and “Midnight Mass,” serves as executive producer. After noticing that some gruesome scenes were either missing or less intense due to budget constraints, NEON provided additional funding and a professional re-edit by Brett W. Bachman (who has worked on films like “Companion,” “Mandy,” and “Pig”) to enhance the movie’s gore and violence content. This information comes from IndieWire.

In April, Stuckmann enthusiastically shared with his Kickstarter backers that the use of NEON allowed for a more intense depiction of certain gory scenes in the movie “Shelby Oaks”.

Shelby Oaks Gets Its First Trailer

In a fusion of storytelling and actual footage, the movie titled Shelby Oaks features Camille Sullivan, who starred in Hunter Hunter, Brendan Sexton III from Don’t Breathe 2, Sarah Durn of Where the Crawdads Sing, Michael Beach known for his role in Mayor of Kingstown, Keith David famous for his work in The Thing, and Derek Mears, who portrayed a character in the 2009 version of Friday the 13th.

In the story, Shelby Oaks focuses on Mia Sullivan, who has been on a relentless quest for twelve years to find her missing sister, Riley Durn. Riley, a former paranormal investigator and host of the show “The Paranormal Paranoids,” vanished while delving into the mysteries of the abandoned town of Shelby Oaks. Since then, Mia has been frantically searching for any trace of her sister, convinced that she is still alive. As Mia digs deeper into the mystery surrounding Riley’s disappearance, she begins to uncover unsettling clues and evidence of a dark supernatural force that she suspects goes back to her and Riley’s childhood days.

This past Comic-Con in San Diego, I spilled the beans to ComicBook about how Joel Anderson’s 2008 chilling masterpiece, “Lake Mungo,” served as the primary influence for the creation of “Shelby Oaks.

As a film enthusiast, let me share my thoughts with you about an extraordinary movie that has left a lasting impression on me – the chilling Australian production titled “Lake Mungo,” directed by Joel Anderson. Unlike most films, this one is presented as a documentary, but it’s not just any ordinary documentary; it’s a masterpiece of horror that I can honestly say ranks among the scariest movies I’ve ever experienced in my life.

The reason for its effectiveness lies primarily in the exceptional performances by the cast. Their dedication and authenticity make the chilling events on screen feel all too real, making it even more unsettling. What makes this movie even more intriguing to me is the fact that the filmmaker, Joel Anderson, seems to have vanished from public view after completing this project. It adds an enigmatic quality to the film, creating a sense of mystery around its creator.

I find it fascinating to ponder about the man who brought such a terrifying vision to life, only to vanish without a trace. It’s as if he disappeared along with the line between fiction and reality that his movie so skillfully blurred. That’s what makes “Lake Mungo” so captivating for me – it leaves you questioning not just the story on screen, but also the man behind the camera.

Shelby Oaks will arrive in theaters on October 3rd.
