In the film “Jurassic World: Rebirth” (released in 2014 by Gareth Edwards, who also directed “Godzilla”), the action unfolds on Ile Saint-Hubert, a location previously used as an abandoned research facility for both Jurassic Park and Jurassic World. The facility was the site of a containment failure in 2010. InGen’s scientists, engrossed in determining if they could create new species, failed to consider whether they should, resulting in the crossbreeding of dinosaur species to produce “engineered attractions” for the now-closed theme parks.
However, the genetically modified creatures were considered unattractive by the public, so they remained on an island. It falls to mercenary Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson), paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey), and boat captain Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) to journey to this island and retrieve DNA samples from three massive species inhabiting it by land, sea, and air. The purpose is for Parker-Genix Pharmaceutical to create a drug capable of preventing heart disease.
In order to achieve this, they need to outlive their encounter with the abnormal creatures on Ile Saint-Hubert, such as the deformed Tyrannosaurus rex (Distortus rex), malformed Velociraptors and Pteranodon hybrids known as Mutadons. With the digital release of Jurassic World Rebirth, bonus features have unveiled additional concept art depicting alternate designs for the genetically modified Mutadons – these designs were not used in the final version of the film.
The Mutadons were dreamt up by David Koepp, who penned the script for “Jurassic World Rebirth.” This unique creature concept stemmed from an actual event where a bat dug itself into a pillar outside Koepp’s home.
In the documentary “Jurassic World Rebirth: Hatching a New Era,” Koepp recounts an experience where he was gazing at something inside a column. Suddenly, two large claws appeared and from them emerged a massive bat that had been napping there. He thought to himself, “This creature will be starring in my upcoming film.
According to production designer James Clyne, the Mutadons presented a significant design dilemma: “To what extent should we base them on the original DNA of dinosaurs, and how much freedom should we take in creating them from our own imagination?
In their initial concept, the Mutadons may remind you of the colossal MUTOs – Massive Unknown Earth Creatures – from the MonsterVerse series, first introduced in the 2014 film Godzilla directed by Edwards. However, unlike the D-rex, which was inspired by extraterrestrial creatures such as the Rancor from Star Wars and the Xenomorph from Alien, Edwards opted to make the Mutadons a hybrid of two well-known dinosaurs instead.
After conducting numerous creative tests with various designs, we find ourselves questioning if we’re overcomplicating things. Perhaps it’s better to simply envision a soaring raptor that appears capable of flight,” Edwards explained, further suggesting that the Mutadons should not be an odd combination, but rather seem like something “nature would have naturally evolved into.
As a passionate cinephile, I remember the lengthy deliberation I went through when tasked with envisioning the mutants in our film. There were numerous revisions as we fine-tuned their appearance, and at one point, the Mutadons took on a more raptor-like form before the director decided to adjust their look.
Aloy mentioned that they needed to discover something that felt more natural yet retained sharp lines. The Mutadons were eventually designed with ‘vulture-like’ characteristics, reminiscent of the scales from the raptor in 2001’s Jurassic Park III. They also have a beak at the front, which was slightly shortened to resemble the raptor even more. There was much discussion regarding how much membrane should be visible when the wing is folded, but they opted for a more concealed appearance in the final design,” is one way to paraphrase it in a natural and easy-to-read manner.
Jurassic World Rebirth is now available to rent or own on Digital HD.
