New Marvel Rumor Teases the Best ’90s Character Could Get His Own Animated Movie

It’s been speculated that Sony is devising strategies for its upcoming Marvel movies, and a recent rumor hints at a beloved Spider-Man character potentially starring in an independent animated film. This comes after the announcement of Spider-Punk, who will lead a spin-off movie based on “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” according to insider Daniel Richtman. Furthermore, there are whispers about other animated films centered around Spider-Woman and Venom also being in development. At this point, specifics about these projects, such as whether they’ll adopt the animation style of the “Spider-Verse” films or forge their own visual identity, remain undisclosed.

Of course, Venom starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock led a live-action film trilogy, and even though these films weren’t critically acclaimed, they proved financially lucrative, raking in a collective $1.8 billion worldwide. Regrettably, the franchise experienced decreasing profits with each new release; last year’s Venom: The Last Dance was the least profitable, earning approximately $478.9 million globally.

The Venom movies were the only hits in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe franchise. Movies like Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter received negative reviews and flopped at the box office. Consequently, Sony ceased work on Spider-Man spin-offs and started concentrating on Spider-Man: A New Dawn and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse instead.

Ever since last autumn’s grand premiere of “Venom: The Last Dance,” there’s been a buzz about Sony cooking up an “Agent Venom” flick. This project could potentially keep their live-action franchise alive without Tom Hardy, as it would center around Flash Thompson forming a bond with the symbiote. However, it seems like no significant strides have been taken on that film since those initial whispers first surfaced. As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for some updates!

A cartoon version of the film “Venom” seems like an intriguing shift for Sony Pictures, offering something new after the live-action films saw declining profits over time. Some might argue that audiences’ interest in these movies has waned, and even changing the main character might not be enough to rekindle excitement. Switching to animation could give the next Venom movie a unique edge, helping it stand out from its predecessors. Employing a new medium could also provide filmmakers with an opportunity to bring a fresh perspective to the material. This strategy proved effective for the “Spider-Verse” movies, which skillfully blend emotion and comedy. There’s no reason Venom can’t star in his own captivating animated film as well.

I can certainly understand why Sony decided to halt the live-action Spider-Man spinoffs, but it’s clear that Venom is too beloved a character to remain idle indefinitely. With the conclusion of the Spider-Verse animated trilogy, an animated Venom or Spider-Woman film could be an excellent opportunity for Sony to continue capitalizing on these successful projects. The creativity and passion for the source material that shines through in the Spider-Verse films is simply astonishing.

A Venom movie would likely require a different tone to better suit the character, but it’s thrilling to envision what Sony’s animation team could conjure up. Animation allows for boundless imagination, so this could be the perfect platform to give Venom the critically acclaimed film he deserves.
