The world of “Stranger Things” is growing beyond Hawkins, Indiana. In 2022, Netflix revealed that they were expanding their popular series, “Stranger Things,” with its fifth and final season scheduled for later this year. The creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, have confirmed the development of a spinoff series within Netflix’s Upside Down Pictures, which is also producing the animated series titled “Stranger Things: Tales From ’85.” However, details about the live-action spinoff based on an original concept by the Duffer Brothers remain scarce.
But actor Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler, apparently predicted what the spinoff might be.
According to Ross Duffer, who spoke to Variety, neither Netflix nor any of the show’s producers or directors have managed to come up with an idea for the spinoff. Remarkably, it was Finn who discovered what the spinoff should be about. The Duffers have shared some mental insights with this young individual.
In simpler terms, Wolfhard described the “Stranger Things” spinoff as having a resemblance to David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks,” suggesting that it is somewhat like an anthology series with varying tones, yet still taking place in the same or similar universe as Stranger Things, but set outside of Hawkins.
Wolfhard expressed that the concept revolves around varying settings connected by the lore of the Upside Down. There’s no reference to Hawkins or our characters; instead, they were exploring possibilities if Netflix was interested. I believe they are and it may come to fruition, but as of now, there’s no formal agreement.
He went on to say, “In my opinion, the best approach would involve laboratories scattered all over. If there’s one in Hawkins, I suspect there might be one in Russia too. Could there be more elsewhere?
In the show “Stranger Things”, Wolfhard mentions Hawkins National Laboratory, a facility where Dr. Martin Brenner and other researchers carried out experiments under the CIA’s Project MKUltra. One of the subjects of these experiments, Terry Ives, gave birth to a girl named Jane (Millie Bobby Brown), who later became known as Eleven – the 11th subject in Project Indigo, revealed in the official prequel novel “Stranger Things: Suspicious Minds”.
In the series, additional characters have been introduced who were previously featured in earlier episodes. For instance, Linnea Berthelsen’s character Kali Prasad’s Eight, who escaped from Hawkins Lab as shown in Stranger Things 2, and Jamie Campbell Bower’s character Henry Creel’s One, better known as the antagonist Vecna, have both made appearances.
The First Shadow’). Similarly, we learn more about the Kamchatka laboratory, which belongs to the Soviet Union, through comic book series.
In 2022, when the talk circulated about potential spinoffs featuring Eleven, Steve, Dustin, or other characters from the series, I found myself expressing a lack of enthusiasm for such ideas. After investing countless hours delving into their individual stories, I feel that revisiting these territories holds little appeal for me as a creator. Instead, I find myself drawn to unexplored realms and fresh narratives.
He mentioned, keeping secrets, ‘There’s a tale linked to the universe of ‘Stranger Things’, but it’s essentially about the way we’re narrating that narrative.’
The three-part Stranger Things season 5 premieres Nov. 26 on Netflix.
