Chris Hemsworth Has a Major Update on His Netflix Action Franchise

Chris Hemsworth, known for his breakout role as Marvel’s Thor and currently facing new trials on the latest season of Limitless: Live Better Now, has established himself as one of Hollywood’s dependable leading men. Apart from his Avengers endeavors, he has also created a highly successful action series at Netflix, starring in Extraction. The initial installments have proven to be international sensations for the streaming platform, and viewers are eagerly anticipating updates about the sequel. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hemsworth revealed that another Extraction film is under development, but he cannot yet reveal when it will hit the screens.

Hemsworth expressed that his character, Tyler Rake, is becoming agitated. He admitted that he too is feeling a stirring within himself, like Tyler Rake’s restlessness, and it needs an outlet. They, the creative team, are brainstorming various concepts for potential projects where they can further develop the series and the third film. The plan is to produce another movie, though the exact timeline is uncertain.

2020 marked the start of the “Extraction” series, introducing viewers to Tyler Rake – a troubled Australian black ops mercenary. In this adventure, he undertakes a mission to rescue the kidnapped son of a Bangladeshi drug lord in Dhaka. The movie, adapted from the graphic novel “Ciudad,” was praised for its gritty, realistic action scenes and set a new standard, with an impressive 99 million households watching it within its first month on Netflix, making it their most-watched original film at that time.

In the follow-up movie of 2023, titled “Extraction 2“, they significantly raised the stakes. Following a narrow escape from his last assignment, Rake is drafted to rescue the family of a merciless Georgian criminal from a lethal prison. The sequel received acclaim for its daring action sequences, notably a remarkable 21-minute uninterrupted take, and it also matched its precursor on Netflix’s list of most-watched films ever, making “Extraction” the first film series to have two entries in Netflix’s Top 10.

Extraction Is Getting a Spinoff Without Chris Hemsworth

In their ongoing endeavors, Netflix and the Russo Brothers’ production company, AGBO, are extending the universe of the movie “Extraction” with a fresh television series. Unlike the films, this eight-episode spinoff will not star Chris Hemsworth. Instead, it will be headlined by French actor Omar Sy, who rose to global fame on Netflix’s hit show “Lupin.” In this new series, Sy will portray a brand new mercenary character embarking on a perilous hostage rescue mission in Libya. Given his acclaimed acting career in France, where he was the first Black actor to win the César Award for Best Actor for “The Intouchables,” and his appearances in blockbusters like “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and “Jurassic World,” Sy is an ideal candidate to steer the franchise into new territories.

The offshoot intends to preserve the thrilling intensity that the series is famous for, all while introducing fresh characters and locales. Formerly of The Walking Dead, Glen Mazzara will oversee the show, with Joe and Anthony Russo, along with original director Sam Hargrave, serving as executive producers. Angela Russo-Otstot from AGBO has confirmed their dedication to portraying “imperfect yet heroic mercenaries that highlight universal themes,” indicating a plan to expand a cinematic universe centered on the brand by featuring such characters.

You can expect to see Hemsworth next time when the series “Live Better Now” under the title “Limitless: Live Better Now” starts streaming on Disney+, which is scheduled for August 15th.
