Marvel’s Multiverse Goes to War in New Battleworld Series (Exclusive)

As a devoted Marvel enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that heroes from various realms within the expansive Marvel Multiverse are preparing for another epic battle in what’s been dubbed “The Secret War.” This intriguing narrative is at the heart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe right now. Anticipation is high for the upcoming film, Avengers: Secret Wars, but comic book aficionados have already witnessed two previous iterations of this event. The original took place in 1984, and more recently, Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic’s version redefined the entire Marvel Universe.

In these battles, the combat takes place on a unique terrain known as Battleworld, and it’s this setting that will be at the core of an upcoming limited series. So, fellow Marvel fans, let’s see who emerges victorious in this multiverse-shaping conflict!

In a recent conversation, we chatted with writer Christos Gage about the upcoming series, Battleworld. He shared insights into his plans for this epic storyline, revealing how it intertwines with the multiverse. During the discussion, he talked about the challenges of writing a comic with such an extensive cast, the characters he was eager to develop, the various worlds these heroes hail from, the primary antagonist in Battleworld, and his collaboration with artist Marcus To. Additionally, we’re thrilled to unveil an exclusive sneak peek at the interior pages from Battleworld #1.

As a huge fan, I can’t help but admire your growing expertise in the multiverse, especially after your remarkable work on Weapon X-Men. Now, you have the incredible opportunity to delve into the expansive Marvel Multiverse. So, how do you manage such an extensive cast of characters when crafting a comic?

As I sat down to pen my review for Battleworld, I found myself overwhelmed by the tantalizing array of Marvel characters at my disposal. However, it quickly became apparent that the true challenge lay not in the selection, but in defining the heart of the story I wished to tell. In this instance, I chose to focus on characters grappling with significant regrets, unresolved traumas, or desires for change – a common thread that would weave through the narrative.

Enter Hank Pym, whose struggles with mental illness have left an indelible mark on his life; a young Spider-Man still reeling from the loss of Uncle Ben and the self-recrimination that followed; and characters hailing from dystopian futures such as King Thor and Storm from Days of Future Past. Each character embodies this theme, providing the rich tapestry for my story. Once I had established the narrative’s core, selecting the appropriate characters became a far smoother process.

Of all the characters, which ones have you found the most fascinating to delve into? I’m particularly interested in hearing about your thoughts on revitalizing some lesser-known legends such as the first Star Brand.

I must admit, I was genuinely thrilled about Star Brand! And my exploration of him has been fascinating. The character that took me by surprise was Kushala, also known as Spirit Rider. She held the roles of Sorcerer Supreme and Ghost Rider during her time in the mid to late 1800s. I’ve also found great pleasure in writing Warbird, who is Carol Danvers from a time when she had recently overcome alcoholism and was re-entering the Avengers. Unlike the current Marvel era where Carol is competent, a powerful leader, and has her life together, Warbird portrays a character at a very different point in her journey. Writing her has been both challenging and rewarding as I strive to depict a character who mirrors her recent rock bottom while still maintaining the potential to become the Captain Marvel we’re familiar with today.

Speaking of Korvac, it’s been a while since we last saw him, but let me tell you, he possesses an immense power that makes him a force to be reckoned with. Can I give you a hint about his role in shaping this latest Battleworld and the Secret War unfolding there?

In contrast to the initial Battleworld, composed of shards from disparate planets, this one is fashioned from fragments of Earths across various time periods. Here you’ll find the primitive past, a future ruled by Martians as depicted in Killraven’s timeline, an alternate reality New York where the Axis powers triumphed in World War II, and pieces from more recent or imminent eras. Among these fragments emerges a unique character yet unseen – the Avenging Wasp – who hails from a universe where Hank Pym met his end at the hands of Baron Zemo during an early Avengers mission. This new Jan and our version of Hank create a compelling interaction. The motive behind Korvac’s desire for such individuals is still to be unveiled…

Is it possible for us to welcome Marcus To aboard our art project? What unique aspects or elements might fans find particularly noteworthy as he contributes to this endeavor?

Working with Marcus is simply fantastic. He possesses an exceptional blend of talents, excelling in both dramatic character portrayals and high-energy action sequences. The more of his work I encounter, the more daring and imaginative my ideas become. To me, Marcus’s craft embodies everything I aspire to see in a superhero narrative – electrifying action, profound character dynamics, and breathtaking visual flair!
