As a seasoned movie critic, I’ve always held a soft spot for the iconic vampire hunter, Blade. Despite his previous successes on the silver screen, it seems Marvel Studios has faced challenges reviving this beloved character. The mastermind behind the original trilogy, David S. Goyer, sensing the need for assistance, reached out with a helping hand.
Goyer, a veteran in comic book adaptations and currently promoting the climactic finale of Netflix’s The Sandman, shared his offer to Marvel in an interview with ComicBook. Reflecting on his tenure as Blade’s creator, he admitted feeling content with where he left the day-walker, but his insatiable curiosity compelled him to extend a helping hand in reintroducing Blade into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Goyer expressed that he felt content allowing someone else to handle the continuation of Blade, and he mentioned several other superhero films he admired, despite their comparison to his previous work featuring the same characters. He went on to say, “I was a big fan of Robert Pattinson’s Batman. It’s not like I contributed to a character’s story and can’t enjoy a fresh take on that character. I wrote Man of Steel, and I liked the new Superman. So, I am more than ready to witness another version of Blade.

Goyer expressed confusion about the difficulties they’re facing since Mahershala Ali was already cast. He seemed ideal for the role. Goyer admitted he wasn’t sure what changes they were making. Many people and journalists have asked him to intervene, but before this happened, he hadn’t really thought about it.
There’s been a mix of opinions regarding Blade, sparking intrigue among both experts and casual viewers. Even Goyer, who wasn’t exempt from this curiosity, inquired about potential assistance from Marvel six months ago. “My agent reached out to ask if they needed help,” he stated. “They replied that they were fine, they’re on the right track now.” While he wouldn’t turn down the opportunity, revisiting it after so many years would certainly be intriguing.
In the early 2000s, I had the privilege of being part of the Blade trilogy, as Guoyer penned the scripts for all three films featuring Wesley Snipes. Not only that, but he also helmed the third installment, Blade: Trinity. During that time, I was engaged in discussions about spinoffs, and I endeavored to lay the groundwork for those in the third film.
He explained that New Line requested him to introduce new characters, leading to the selection of ‘The Nightstalkers’ for spin-off potential. This decision resulted in Jessica Biel joining the cast due to her role in the ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ remake. Ryan Reynolds was an unexpected choice, but he managed to persuade him. To fit the role, Reynolds had to gain 26 pounds of muscle. The movie did well, surpassing the first film’s performance, yet not quite reaching the success of the second one, nor enough to trigger a spin-off.
As a passionate movie buff, I can’t help but reflect on what could have been if the original plan had materialized. Goyer hinted that it would have meant Morbius’ debut much earlier in the timeline. Being a die-hard comic book fan, I recall vividly that I was eager to see him back then. It would have been thrilling to incorporate elements from the Darkhold, a fascinating artifact from the Marvel universe, into the storyline.
The most recent whispers about Marvel suggest that Blade will enter the MCU for the first time when the Multiverse Saga concludes. Until then, “The Sandman” television series is complete and currently streaming on Netflix, while Goyer’s science fiction series, “Foundation,” is airing its third season episode by episode on Apple TV+ each week.
