This weekend, the Outlander spin-off titled “Blood of My Blood” will be aired, sparking enthusiasm among viewers for its unique storylines, as they are not adapted from any of Diana Gabaldon’s novels.
Upon its unveiling, some fans found themselves slightly perplexed about the imaginative path of the expanded Outlander universe, given previous whispers of a spin-off centering around Lord John Grey.
Although Maril Davis, the showrunner and executive producer, has expressed a desire to create a Lord John Grey series, they found it inappropriate to take on as the initial Outlander spin-off at that particular moment.

Davis stated that although it wasn’t the ideal moment, there’s still a chance for Lord John’s story (Blood of My Blood). It seemed fitting to continue another captivating love story featuring Jamie and Claire’s parents, and interweaving their tale with Jamie and Claire’s was an opportunity they couldn’t resist.
In the main Outlander storyline, Jamie Fraser, played by Sam Heughan, and Claire Fraser, portrayed by Caitriona Balfe, are the primary focus. However, throughout the series’ various seasons, several characters reappear frequently, with Lord John Grey being one of these recurring figures.
Previously, David Berry, the actor portraying Grey, shared insights as to why a standalone show focusing on Lord John, his character, hadn’t been produced yet, even though Diana Gabaldon had penned an entire collection of novels and novellas expanding upon this character.
During an interview with Deadline, Berry shared: “I haven’t discussed this topic before, but now that the series has concluded, I feel a bit more at ease discussing it. In season 4, there was a point where we were planning to film the Lord John series.
Originally, a writer was hired and I agreed to work on a series under contract. The project was on the verge of being accepted by the network, but eventually, they chose not to proceed with it because it didn’t align with their vision at that time.
He stated that he is both ready now and would remain so for the future, while Matt [B Roberts] and Maril [Davis], being the executive producers on Outlander, have shown great enthusiasm about taking it on.
It seems that the success of a potential spin-off largely hinges upon establishing a suitable network and generating sufficient audience interest. At one point, such an endeavor was indeed in consideration. However, its failure to materialize was disheartening when it occurred.
It appears that Davis might be considering another installment featuring the character, Lord John. However, whether this project will actually materialize or not depends largely on audience response and continued interest in the character. In other words, only time will tell if we get to witness more of Lord John’s adventures.
In the United Kingdom, the newest episode of “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” is set to air on MGM+ this coming Saturday, 9th August. If you’re interested in reading Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series, you can purchase the books on Amazon.
