Marvel’s Hulk Redesign Is a Sign of Even Bigger Changes Coming

The iconic character Hulk is set to receive a fresh, possibly indicative redesign ahead of the resumption of his main series. Currently, Philip Kennedy Johnson is penning the adventures of Bruce Banner’s monstrous alter ego in “Incredible Hulk”, and Hulk also plays a significant role in Marvel’s grand cosmic event series, “Imperial”. In this series, Hulk teams up with other gamma-empowered heroes such as Brawn (Amadeus Chow) and She-Hulk. Although the four-issue “Imperial” is still unfolding, we know that the aftermath will include a continuous series titled “Planet She-Hulk”. As of now, Marvel hasn’t disclosed any post-“Imperial” plans for Hulk, but the unveiling of a “street-verse” costume hints at him receiving a new comic book series starting with issue #1.

Marvel unveiled Street-Verse variant covers, created by popular cover artist Inhyuk Lee, showcasing Marvel characters dressed in modern street fashion instead of their usual vibrant costumes. These covers will debut on selected Marvel comics arriving in November, and one of them features an upcoming title that hasn’t been disclosed yet. Given the character depicted on this unannounced title cover, there’s a strong possibility it could be a new Hulk #1 issue.

Hulk Gets a Street-Verse Makeover Before Possible New Marvel Comics Series

As a die-hard movie buff, I’d rephrase it like this: In the Street-Verse, Hulk sports a laid-back, casual look. He’s bare-chested, wearing just a pair of shorts, and has his top tied around his waist. He also dons gloves on his hands and straps on his feet that cover his ankles. This is quite different from the Gladiator Hulk we see in Imperial. Marvel has unveiled five titles spinning off from Imperial: Planet She-Hulk by Stephanie Phillips and Aaron Kuder, Nova: Centurion by Jed MacKay, both of whom are also penning their series’ Imperial War one-shots. The other three titles include Black Panther: Intergalactic, Exiles, and Imperial Guardians, but the creative teams for those haven’t been revealed yet.

In a post on social media, Inhyuk Lee expressed his pride in designing the Street-Verse Variant Covers for Marvel. Having started as a character designer at a video game company two decades ago, he’s accustomed to character design and appreciates contemporary and functional designs, particularly techwear. Since last winter, he’s been working on a personal project, modernizing Spider-Man characters’ costumes, which he’s titled ‘Who’s Next?’ Marvel noticed this series and offered him the opportunity to work on this cover and mural project.

For the past 13 years, I’ve been fortunate enough to collaborate with Marvel. They’ve consistently understood my skills and provided guidance tailored to my strengths. Working with Marvel has been delightful as they appreciate my abilities. I look forward to everyone enjoying these cover designs.

In Imperial Comic #1, it’s stated that Hiro-Kala, son of the Hulk, and Emperor J’son, father of Star-Lord, were among two influential galactic leaders who were tragically killed. The Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda found themselves falsely accused for these murders. Now, a war has erupted throughout the galaxy as two enigmatic manipulators seem to be orchestrating events from behind the scenes.
