In the initial film of the new DC Universe titled “Superman,” there’s an emphasis on portraying the Man of Steel as a novice superhero, still navigating his path after flying around Metropolis for three years. As he is yet to fully grasp his potential and the responsibilities of being a hero, Lex Luthor manages to outsmart him promptly.
Luthor sets his plan in motion by releasing a monstrous creature in Metropolis and inciting a conflict in Jarhanpur to divert Superman’s attention from his main objectives: tarnishing the hero’s reputation and eliminating him. When this scheme fails, Luthor introduces Ultraman, a clone of Superman, to carry on the mission. With assistance from Krypto, Ultraman is defeated, marking another triumph for the film’s namesake character.
Absolutely, facing a different iteration of himself is just the beginning for Superman. It’s likely that there are countless nefarious characters traversing the galaxy with intentions to harm him, and each one will be more powerful than the last. In the movie “Superman 2”, seven DC villains challenge David Corenswet’s Superman.
1) General Zod
In a surprising twist, it’s revealed that Kal-El’s parents, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van, were not who Superman initially believed them to be. Instead of sending him to Earth to safeguard humanity, they intended for him to take control. This contrasts with General Zod, who in most DC narratives shares this aggressive stance. If Zod is ever released from the Phantom Zone in the DC Universe, he’ll undoubtedly try to deceive Superman. Given their shared Kryptonian heritage and history of conflict, it seems fitting that Superman would confront the most dangerous Kryptonian ever in his next standalone adventure.
2) Brainiac
Although Superman has starred in numerous movie adventures, none of them have featured the well-known DC antagonist Brainiac yet. This cunning villain is particularly fond of gathering knowledge and his sinister endeavors led him to Krypton, where he seized the city of Kandor and reduced it to a miniature size as part of his collection. As Superman plans to uncover more about his home planet, an encounter with Brainiac could be a plausible development in future stories.
3) Mongul
Certain antagonists take delight in causing global destruction, and Mongul, the sovereign of Warworld, happens to be one of them. Though Mongul possesses immense power, his amusement often comes from watching others engage in conflict – he even organizes fights among aliens as gladiatorial contests. When Superman gets captured on Warworld, he won’t rest until every prisoner on that fortress is freed.
4) Metallo
As a fan, I’d love to see James Gunn and Co. leverage the versatility of Metallo in DC Comics for an exciting twist in their upcoming project. While there are multiple versions of this character, they all share one intriguing commonality: Kryptonite fuels their suit. By equipping a villain with a personal vendetta against Superman and enhancing them with an upgrade that matches the hero’s power level, we could be in for a thrilling showdown.
Superman himself has demonstrated just how hazardous Kryptonite can be, making it an ideal element to elevate the tension between our favorite heroes and villains. Introducing a formidable adversary who thrives on Kryptonite could certainly add another layer of complexity to the storyline, making it even more engaging for fans.
5) Bizarro
As a passionate film buff, I must say that the DC Universe has unveiled its take on Bizarro, who bears a striking resemblance to Ultraman in many ways. However, Luthor’s creation won’t benefit from his time spent in a black hole; instead, it might fuel his anger and amplify his power. Therefore, Superman will need to dig deep and use every trick up his sleeve if he hopes to outsmart his mirror image.
6) Darkseid
The malevolent ruler of Apokolips is perpetually watching Earth, and the influx of numerous heroes won’t bring him joy. Darkseid might seek out the Anti-Life Equation, which was hinted at in Superman 2, and initiate a confrontation with Superman. If Superman believed that Ultraman was formidable, he’s about to experience a harsh reality when he faces an Omega Beam from the wrong direction.
7) Lobo
In 2026’s version of Supergirl, Lobo, previously portrayed by Jason Momoa (who was once Aquaman), is set to make a significant appearance. This role may cause troubles for Kara Zor-El during her intergalactic journeys. Although Lobo isn’t the main antagonist in this movie, it seems likely that he survives and develops a grudge against Kryptonians. Given his status as one of the galaxy’s strongest beings, Superman should be cautious when Lobo’s space motorcycle appears in Earth’s atmosphere.
