The upcoming movie “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” faces a daunting task indeed. Not only does it debut when the Marvel Cinematic Universe is seeking redemption following several less-than-successful releases, but the title itself carries quite a load of history. Previously, Marvel’s First Family had a disappointing outing on the silver screen, with Josh Trank’s film receiving unfavorable reviews from both critics and fans. Similarly, “Fan4stic” did not perform well financially, which was unexpected since 2015 seemed to be an unbeatable year for superhero movies.
The two films featuring Miles Teller’s lead role, namely Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, had moderate success at the box office. However, their shortcomings were primarily due to the storyline, particularly the portrayal of the main antagonist in the second film, Galactus. The new movie, First Steps, takes extra care to rectify these issues, and while it acknowledges aspects from Rise of the Silver Surfer, it even goes so far as to incorporate a significant portion of that movie’s climax, which ultimately enhances its quality.
The Silver Surfer Is on the Fence in Fantastic Four: First Steps
The Fantastic Four exude confidence as the storyline “First Steps” begins, having spent several years combating crime. They feel equipped to handle any issue, even those originating from beneath the earth’s surface. However, they are not prepared for extraterrestrial threats. Early in the movie, the Silver Surfer arrives on Earth and announces that his master, the Devourer of Worlds, is en route to consume the planet. As fear grips the population, the Fantastic Four venture into space to challenge the villain. However, negotiations crumble when Galactus demands Reed Richards and Susan Storm’s baby, forcing them to flee hastily. While Reed, Sue, and Ben Grimm remain preoccupied with the Galactus situation, Johnny Storm contemplates a creative approach: manipulating the bad guy’s herald.
Johnny begins studying every detail about the Silver Surfer’s language, having identified it from messages received at the Baxter Building by Reed. As the herald arrives on Earth and wreaks havoc, including destroying many teleportation bridges that could save the planet, Johnny prepares for this encounter in New York City. He confronts her, playing recordings of her people’s voices, expressing gratitude for her sacrifices to protect them, as well as messages from planets she has marked for destruction. The Surfer, overwhelmed by the emotions, departs back into space, waiting for her superior to complete their task. However, she doesn’t stay away for long, reappearing during the Fantastic Four’s battle against Galactus and pushing the villain through a portal. Since her fate remains unknown after going through the opening, her sacrifice echoes another herald’s significant act.
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer Gives Its Titular Herald a Redemption Arc
As a passionate film enthusiast, I find an intriguing similarity between the narrative of ‘Rise of the Silver Surfer’ and ‘First Steps’. Much like the enigmatic figure in ‘First Steps’, the Silver Surfer makes his presence known on Earth, causing chaos that leaves us questioning his intentions. However, it isn’t until Reed Richards delves deeper that we uncover the truth: this alien is not a random destructor but rather a herald preparing Earth for Galactus, a cosmic entity with whom our beloved Fantastic Four eventually empathize. After managing to free the Silver Surfer from government confinement, this cosmic herald undergoes a transformation, switching allegiances and joining forces with the heroes in their battle against Galactus.
Retrieving his board restores the Silver Surfer’s strength, enabling him to resurrect Sue who was killed by Doctor Doom and challenge his superior. He charges headlong into a cloud, causing an immense explosion that appears to end them both. Yet, much like his Marvel Cinematic Universe version, the post-credits scene in “Rise of the Silver Surfer” suggests he is far from defeated. Although the character did not reappear, he laid the groundwork for future Silver Surfers to act heroically amidst the perils of defying Galactus.
