Marvel’s Ultimate Universe unveiled the culmination of its initial two years at SDCC, and each of the Ultimate series is moving towards its conclusion. “Ultimate X-Men” has been a captivating, gradual unfolding since it began, with writer/artist Peach Momoko offering readers a chilling manga-style depiction of mutants battling the Children of the Atom in Hi No Kuni, an alternate Japan on Earth-6160. The storyline centers around Hisako Ichiki, who is known as Armor in Earth-616 and grapples with her mutation and the harsh truths of being a mutant on Earth-6160. The series introduces new interpretations of classic mutants like Natsu, who resembles Cyclops and Maystorm, a character inspired by Storm, as well as alternative versions such as Viper, Nico Minoru, Surge, and Akihiro, who is said to be Wolverine’s son but exhibits different powers from his Earth-616 counterpart. In “Ultimate X-Men” #18, significant hints are dropped regarding the identity of the leader of the Children of the Atom, previously known as the Maester.
The Ultimate X-Men stands out as a refreshing departure from most current X-Men comics. Among Marvel’s prestigious titles, the Ultimate series shines particularly bright, with Ultimate X-Men being one of the strongest books yet. It introduces and develops characters like Armor and a new Shadow King, while the latest issue explores the fallout from the X-Men’s attempts to rescue Armor from the Children of the Atom.
In this recent issue, a character named the Maester appears, who seems remarkably similar to one of the most formidable X-Men antagonists-Mister Sinister. Although it’s still speculation, there are numerous hints suggesting that the Maester might be Mister Sinister in the Earth-6160 universe.
In summary, Ultimate X-Men offers a captivating take on familiar characters and presents an intriguing theory about the identity of the mysterious Maester.
The Maester’s Purpose Is Very Sinister
From the start, I had a feeling that the Maester character shared similarities with an X-Men antagonist, initially thinking it could be Magneto due to his name starting with M and his mutant supremacy ideology. However, he never displayed any powers or had the distinctive silver hair. The theory was further debunked when it was revealed that Magneto was deceased in “Ultimate Wolverine.” Instead, evidence points towards Mister Sinister, as suggested by the character’s cape, a detail I hadn’t noticed before in previous “Ultimate X-Men” issues.
Additionally, since the emergence of the Children of the Atom, the Maester has been conducting mysterious experiments on mutants. Initially, it appeared he was searching for ways to control mutants, which led him to target Kageyama, the 6160 Shadow King, who seemed to be connected to Armor in some unknown way. The Maester also possessed Akihiro and it seemed like he was harnessing Akihiro’s powers to manipulate the Children (Akihiro from the 616 universe has limited mind control abilities due to pheromones, so if the two Akihiros share similar powers, that could be a factor).
However, “Ultimate X-Men” #18 sheds light on a new project called MY-X, which appears to involve Hisako, Kageyama, and Akihiro significantly.
A detail that caught my attention was the Maester’s interaction with Natsu. Similar to how Sinister had an attachment to Cyclops in the 616 universe, I sensed a similar obsession in the Maester and Natsu. When Natsu attacked the Maester to save Mori, his reaction hinted at years of care he had taken for her. The Maester had severed Mori’s arm before Natsu struck him, causing her blood to spatter the floor. Interestingly, the Maester consumed this blood after the X-Men departed, and it facilitated his recovery. He later discovered a wound on Akihiro and tasted his blood, which surprised him. This revelation led him to understand that whatever transpired between Hisako and Kageyama within Akihiro resulted in something he had been searching for – MY-X. The narrative concludes with the Maester holding a vial, proclaiming that he has found what he was looking for. This discovery allowed him to develop MY-X (about which we currently know nothing), unveiling it as the weapon that will empower the Children of the Atom. All these elements suggest that the Maester may be a genetic scientist, and the final image of the book strongly resonates with Mister Sinister’s character.
The Maester Has Many Similarities to Mister Sinister
The success of Ultimate X-Men lies in its unique approach, departing significantly from the original X-Men of Earth-616, yet still drawing inspiration from them. Rather than replicating the 616 X-Men, it employs their elements in unique and distinct manners. The Maester appears to be a prime example of this divergence. In Ultimate X-Men #18, it seems the identity of the Maester is finally being unveiled. This issue provides the most hints thus far, all of which suggest that he is akin to Mister Sinister from Earth-6160.
In the comic series “Ultimate X-Men,” things have significantly changed by the end of Issue #18. The Maester, who has been leveraging his scientific expertise, has constructed his most powerful weapon. However, he’s facing an uphill battle as the X-Men are stronger than ever before and have discovered Armor. Armor seems to have undergone a transformation unlike any we’ve seen, potentially reaching her peak form. The stage is set for a confrontation between the cunning Maester and Hisako leading her X-Men, with a potential clash looming on the horizon.
