Ana De Armas-led Spinoff Leaves Lionsgate With Almost $100 Million Lost

It seems very doubtful that Ana de Armas’ character Eve Macarro will dance on screen again in the near future, as the movie “Ballerina” has reportedly caused significant financial losses for Lionsgate. According to IGN, this Ana de Armas film has resulted in a quarterly net loss of $94 million for Lionsgate, a company that produces television and movies. Despite being set within the popular “John Wick” franchise, the movie failed to capture audiences’ interest, despite receiving generally positive reviews from critics. The film concluded its theatrical run with global earnings of $132.4 million, but it was made for approximately $90 million.

Initially, the earnings of $58 million in domestic sales and $74 million internationally for the movie ‘Ballerina’ may not seem dismal, but it’s important to mention that the marketing expenses are excluded from the production budget. The film received favorable reviews with a 76% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive 92% audience score on Popcornmeter. However, despite these positive ratings and even a cameo by Keanu Reeves as John Wick, ‘Ballerina’ couldn’t quite match the success of the ‘John Wick’ series.

The news follows Lionsgate’s split with Starz, as reported by Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer. He shared that the studio anticipates robust growth in fiscal 2027. This growth is projected from three significant film releases in the upcoming fiscal year, a planned doubling of scripted television series deliveries for the next year, and further development of our brands across new ventures and digital platforms. Additionally, efforts are ongoing to generate new income streams for our movie and TV library, which contributed to another strong trailing 12-month revenue performance in the recent quarter and improved our outlook for the coming year.

Feltheimer is highlighting some key projects that the studio is currently working on. One of these is the upcoming Hunger Games movie, titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which is now in production. Another project is the fifth installment of the John Wick series, a franchise that has been consistently successful at the box office for the studio. The first John Wick film, released in 2014, was a surprising hit and grossed over $86 million on a budget of just $20 million. The most recent movie, John Wick: Chapter 4, raked in an impressive $447.1 million worldwide, leading to the release of a spinoff television series called The Continental: From the World of John Wick, which premiered on Peacock two years ago as a mini-series.

Titled “Ballerina”, this movie falls between “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” and “John Wick: Chapter 4”. It focuses on Eve Macarro, a character versed in the assassin customs of the Ruska Roma, similar to John Wick. Like Wick, Macarro embarks on a vengeful quest against a horde of assassins, aiming to discover those accountable for her father’s demise. Directed by Len Wiseman and penned by Shay Hatten, this film can be rented on platforms like Prime Video and Fandango at Home. It will be available on Blu-ray, 4K UHD, and DVD starting September 9th.
