The actors from the popular sci-fi comedy show “Resident Alien” are grieving alongside its fans following its cancellation earlier this month. The final episode of Season 4, which aired on Friday and also served as the series finale, marked an unexpected conclusion to a television series that had risen to become one of the top sci-fi shows. During San Diego Comic-Con, representatives from ComicBook spoke with stars Alan Tudyk, Sara Tomko, Corey Reynolds, and creator Chris Sheridan about the four whirlwind seasons of the now-canceled Syfy/USA Network series.
The sci-fi series “Resident Alien” first aired on Syfy in 2021, but its journey wasn’t smooth sailing. Despite achieving massive success with a near-perfect 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and being one of the top-rated sci-fi shows of the 21st century on that platform, Alan Tudyk, who starred as an alien in the show, described the past four years as a “whirlwind” due to the many hurdles the series had to overcome repeatedly to finally reach our screens.
As Astra Twelvetrees, played by me throughout all four seasons, I reminisced, “To be honest, none of us could fully let go and embrace each season as a definite one due to the uncertainties surrounding COVID, our potential return, and extended quarantine hours. We felt certain it was ending, but then Season 3 arrived with its uncertainty due to the writer’s strike. So, by the time we reached Season 4, I think we were questioning if we could truly enjoy it and relax. But Chris had other plans.
Resident Alien‘s Cast Hoped for Season 5
As a devoted fan, I’ve been keeping my fingers crossed that our beloved series, Resident Alien, will continue for Season 5. According to Tomko, we held out hope that San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) might just be the place where we find a glimmer of possibility for its return. Tomko elaborated that SDCC was where we dared to think, “maybe this is the small advantage we’ve got on our side.” Reynolds, portraying Sheriff Mike Thompson, added that there were several factors that made me optimistic about the show’s future, such as Resident Alien’s impressive performance on Netflix. He believed that the show’s success on Netflix seemed like it could serve as a powerful catalyst for its prolonged existence.
Despite anticipation for a fifth season of “Resident Alien,” such hopes were dashed on August 8th when it was announced that the show had been canceled. In an interview with TV Insider, Sheridan explained that he had always suspected this might be the final season and expressed his appreciation for being able to conclude the series on a high note, with a finale he deemed his favorite episode of the entire series.
Although the sci-fi series “Resident Alien” has concluded its four-season journey, as Sheridan stated to ComicBook, four seasons represents a significant run in today’s TV landscape. Tudyk further explained, “Moreover, nowadays, it takes being canceled to maintain an existing intellectual property, which can then be revisited.
