Is being a child star worth it? Let Alyson Stoner work it out.
20 years have passed since the dancer first appeared in Missy Elliott’s “Work It” music video and began an acting career. The performer, who has been candid about their battles with anxiety caused by working in a demanding industry, expressed that they can now accept and understand various aspects of their intricate relationship with Hollywood.
Reflecting on their seemingly sudden rise to success during the early 2000s, Alyson revealed to TopMob News’ Francesca Amiker in an exclusive interview that this wave of opportunities unexpectedly resulted in numerous health problems for them.
The 32-year-old stated, “We didn’t realize the immediate and long-lasting effects of being so prominent at such a young age. Following that period, I found myself grappling with various challenges like kidnap threats and handling stalkers, in addition to various health problems stemming from overwork and exhaustion.
The problems faced by the former star of “Cheaper By the Dozen” were not addressed and resolved until many years had passed during therapy sessions.
They pointed out that it’s crucial to acknowledge that our worth isn’t just determined by our productivity or the amount we produce, but rather, we must remember that we are complex individuals with various aspects to our identity.
In my new memoir, Semi-Well-Adjusted Despite Literally Everything, I delve into a spectrum of emotions as I recount my childhood experiences. Although reminiscing about working with Missy brings a sense of warmth, writing about my time on the set of 2008’s Camp Rock was an emotionally challenging task for me.
Alyson expressed that the process was tough for her. She doesn’t enjoy the idea of delving into one’s psyche and heart to create a 90,000-word account for public consumption. While she wouldn’t advise this process for everyone, she does appreciate the freedom she’s found as a result.
They went on to say, “I am working on understanding that I don’t have control over the outcomes from my honesty. However, I can acknowledge that the truth may not always be tactful, yet it can always be presented with kindness and sincerity.
It doesn’t automatically imply that their former costars Joe Jonas, Nick Jonas, Kevin Jonas, and Demi Lovato will dislike what was written about the Disney Channel movie. Their opinions might vary.
Alyson mentioned that she believes the Jonases will find pleasure in the parts of the book where they’ve been included. She also shared that during the writing process, she managed to connect with Demi. Fortunately, Demi was open about her experiences, which allowed Alyson to expand upon them and provide a unique perspective as various events took place from her point of view.
They added, “We’ve been through a lot individually and together.”
Semi Well Adjusted Despite Literally Everything comes out Aug. 12.
