Phasmophobia Will Exit Early Access in 2026 After the Horror 2.0 Update

The cooperative horror game “Phasmophobia,” which has been in Early Access for a while now, continues to receive unwavering support from its developers. In an interview with IGN, the game’s art director, Corey J. Dixon, mentioned that there’s a possibility that Phasmophobia could see a full release as early as 2026. During the interview, Dixon hinted that the 1.0 release of the horror title will align with the anticipated Horror 2.0 update for the game.

The update signifies that Kinetic Games views “Phasmophobia” as fully featured, meaning it will no longer be a game in Early Access. However, the team will still be active on the project after this point. Post-launch, players can anticipate modifications to maps and fresh content additions.

Dixon stated, “Absolutely, we’re planning for version 1.0, and this may coincide with our Horror 2.0 update. This is when we believe the game will have all its essential features. However, this doesn’t mean development will cease; we aim to continue with map revisions, new maps, and additional content. Once the Horror 2.0 is revamped, which follows our upcoming Player Update in 2025, I think the game will feel complete. After that point, I believe it will be in a strong position.”

Regarding when the game Phasmophobia might be considered fully developed, Dixon points out that the team frequently receives requests from the gaming community for specific features, which they appreciate and use to create new feature updates for the game. However, he emphasized that ultimately, the game will be finished when the developers feel it’s ready.

He clarified that determining the completion of the project isn’t straightforward due to continuous suggestions from our community about additional features they’d like to see. Rather than aiming for a specific end date, the team is committed to working on it until they feel proud and satisfied with their work – which aligns with creator Dan Knight’s vision for Day One. They’ll know when they reach that point of excellence, but it won’t be something pre-planned.

Regarding a potential sequel to Phasmophobia from Kinetic Games after the cooperative game leaves Early Access, Dixon hinted that such an idea is not entirely ruled out. Although he did not guarantee a sequel, he did suggest that there are areas in the original game that the studio would like to enhance now that they have gained some experience with it.

Given another chance, we might consider taking on [Phasmophobia] again. If we were to start anew as a company, there would certainly be aspects that we’d want to alter. Some things would make us think, ‘Let’s avoid that next time,’ while others would excite us with the thought of, ‘We should try this instead!’ So, it’s possible that we could revisit this idea.

Kinetic Games unveiled a 2025 roadmap for the horror game Phasmophobia, featuring updates such as a fresh map and enhancements to the game’s existing maps. The game is playable on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms. Notably, the PC version of the game supports SteamVR technology, while the PS5 edition is compatible with PlayStation VR2.
