During the creation of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Square Enix considered making Cloud’s famous Buster Sword smaller to be more realistic. Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, recently discussed this idea in an interview with Julien Chièze, explaining that the team was focused on grounding the game in a sense of realism.
According to a translation from the Final Fantasy 7 fan Twitter account Shinra Archaeology Department, director Tetsuya Nomura felt that Cloud’s ability to swing the Buster Sword with one hand in Remake didn’t feel realistic. He mentioned there was a discussion about potentially designing a lighter version of the sword to address this concern.
In the end, the team chose to keep the Buster Sword’s original design because of how well-known and beloved it is. Hamaguchi also pointed out that changing it to a standard-sized sword might have upset fans of the original game.
He explained that changing the sword too much wasn’t an option. It was too well-known, and players wouldn’t have accepted a simple redesign. Ultimately, they decided to stay true to the original, and it worked – a new generation of players also grew to love it, confirming it was the right decision.
During the same interview, Hamaguchi mentioned that development of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 is progressing smoothly, and the main gameplay is nearly finished. He also hinted that “Highwind” will be an important element in the third game of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series.
As you pointed out, ‘Highwind’ is a key element of the game right now. We’ve essentially finished building the core gameplay, and we’re now focused on polishing everything and completing the final details. As director, I’m very confident in how the finished game will be.
Hamaguchi recently shared an update on the possible title for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3. He and creative director Tetsuya Nomura have discussed it and are now choosing between two options. They expect to finalize the game’s official name by the end of the year.
Hamaguchi stated in a recent interview that he and Tetsuya Nomura have chosen two potential options and will make a final decision within the year. He confirmed that the plan will be finalized before the end of the year.
Square Enix is bringing Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade to Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 on January 22, 2026. After that, they plan to release Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
Naoki Hamaguchi explained that when developing FFVII Remake, the team discussed making Cloud’s Buster Sword more believable. They wondered if the sword’s weight and Cloud being able to swing it with one hand felt unrealistic.
