The 1998 Sega lightgun shooter horror classic, “The House of the Dead 2”, has received a new remake from MegaPixel Studio and Forever Entertainment. However, upon release on August 7th across Steam, Nintendo Switch, and GOG platforms, the game has been criticized by reviewers due to its numerous flaws that seem to overshadow its original horror appeal for many players.
The Steam review score for the game currently stands at 38% “Mostly Negative,” with numerous players expressing a wish to try the remake due to their nostalgic attachment. However, some dedicated fans have found certain changes in this updated version, particularly regarding character voices, less than appealing, even though they find the gameplay enjoyable.
The gameplay is enjoyable and generally stays true to its original version, but the voice acting seems artificial or intentionally robotic in nature. Regardless, it’s dreadful. For now, I’d classify it as a mix, waiting for improvements in the voiceovers.
YouTube content creator, GmanLives, referred to the game as a “lifeless jumble” and believed it warranted the low rating it received on Steam.
In a YouTube video, GmanLives expressed his disappointment by saying, “This thing just isn’t up to par. It’s almost as if it’s a poorly made game meant for use in the background of a TV series or film.
The revamped version of “The House of the Dead 2” features enhanced graphics, re-orchestrated music, and a dual-player mode that can be enjoyed locally. Yet, its debut was met with some disappointment as it lacked complete compatibility with light guns, an element that had added to the game’s nostalgic appeal for players who initially experienced it in arcade machines.
After the initial release, Forever Entertainment has indicated they are working on adding light gun functionality, though they have yet to specify an exact release date.
In a recent Steam post, the Forever Entertainment team shared that they’re thrilled to announce they’re developing full compatibility for RS3 Reaper Lightgun in THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD 2: Remake. This is something many of you have been asking for, and they can’t wait to introduce it in the game. Keep an eye out for more information soon!
Although complete compatibility with traditional light guns remains elusive for certain gamers, players using the Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck can enjoy an immersive alternative through gyroscopic controls. These controls simulate the sensation of a light gun fairly accurately, though some adjustments may be necessary to achieve a truly authentic experience.
The second installment, titled The House of the Dead 2: Remake, is a 2022 remake of the original game by the same studio and developer. Unlike its predecessor, the initial House of the Dead: Remake received more favorable reviews compared to this sequel thus far, but still maintained a somewhat mixed score on Steam. Long-time fans were delighted with its nostalgic gaming experience, yet critics pointed out crashing problems and expressed disappointment that updates addressing these issues have yet to be released.
It’s uncertain if additional features and improvements to The House of the Dead 2: Remake after its launch will manage to reverse the negative opinions of the players. Initially, the game peaked with 240 concurrent players, but it has since remained with only a few dozen. Without substantial changes, it seems unlikely that these players will come back in large numbers.
