In the expansive DC Universe, after the triumph of Superman, James Gunn’s new franchise is set to focus on Supergirl, portrayed by Milly Alcock. This film will depict her character’s journey across the cosmos in pursuit of adventure. Following this space-faring Girl of Steel, however, is Clayface, a standalone movie from acclaimed horror directors James Watkins and Mike Flanagan. By emphasizing the darker aspects of the shape-shifting villain, this film aims to distinguish itself within a genre dominated by action and add depth to the Batman-centered portion of the universe before his introduction.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel excited about the decision to greenlight a film like “Clayface”. This move is bound to inspire other horror filmmakers, and it seems one notable figure has already shared plans for an intriguing script. This story promises to bring none other than the Dark Knight, Joker, and Harley Quinn together on screen! While the concept certainly poses a challenge, Gunn and his team can’t help but appreciate this unexpected opportunity. After all, who are we to look a gift horse in the mouth?
Zach Cregger’s Henchman Movie Idea Is Too Good to Pass Up

In spite of facing competition from two Disney films during its debut weekend, Zach Cregger’s movie “Weapons” has already emerged as one of the year’s most successful releases. Given the immense success of his previous film, “Barbarian,” in 2022, it was anticipated that Cregger would face challenges following up on that success. Unfortunately, his subsequent production encountered setbacks due to the Hollywood labor disputes in 2023, which resulted in the loss of most of its original cast. However, now that “Weapons” has been released, it’s being widely acclaimed as one of the best horror movies in recent years. It distinguishes itself by combining horror with humor and weaving an intriguing narrative around a group of characters who seem to be their own worst enemies. The film is receiving rave reviews from critics, with Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer exceeding 90%, and audiences aren’t far behind, giving it an impressive 87% rating on the Popcornmeter.
It’s exciting to see what director Cregger will do next, as his work could captivate moviegoers. Some may find it surprising that he’s considering franchise projects, such as directing a new Resident Evil film set in the well-known video game world. However, his interests aren’t confined to video games; he’s also writing a script for a DC film if Gunn approves. This potential project revolves around a henchman who disables Batman, leading him into confrontations with other villains like Harley and the Joker. Although this concept seems unconventional, even for Gunn’s franchises, it could be beneficial for the DCU to collaborate with Cregger, particularly if he intends to explore a fresh perspective compared to previous administrations.
The DCU Doesn’t Need Joker and Harley to Be in the Spotlight

Gunn’s current situation can be attributed to the issues within the DC Extended Universe. From the inception of Man of Steel, Zack Snyder and his team chose a somber tone for their franchise, often placing their characters in harsh circumstances to gauge their strength. However, by the time Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was out, it was evident that this direction wasn’t successful. Consequently, last-minute adjustments were made to Suicide Squad, which resulted in an inconsistent movie that squandered its potential. While Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn emerged relatively unscathed, Jared Leto’s Joker didn’t fare well and was sidelined until Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
If Gunn truly desires to avoid repeating past mistakes, he might consider entrusting control to Cregger and allowing him creative freedom. The potential outcome of the Joker appearing as a fool in this movie could be overlooked, as there’s a strong possibility that the innovative ideas Cregger develops will outweigh any initial imperfections. There’s also a slight chance that the villainous character Cregger envisions may become a formidable adversary for the Dark Knight in future DCU projects, facing off against Batman just as the Clown Prince of Crime did before. The DCU should not dwell on regrets, and if utilizing Joker and Harley prematurely is necessary to achieve this, then so be it.
Weapons is in theaters.
